2. Not too surprising
Aviation buffs can check in on this, but I believe the Airbus engines are designed to break off if rotation stops suddenly. Rather than, for example, taking the wing with them.

3. Maybe it broke off on impact?
I can't believe a video of the crash landing hasn't surfaced yet. Surely, someone start filming as soon as they saw a low flying jet in NY.

4. That is what I am thinking
Just dredge the river upstream of the landing site and it can easily be found. If it fell on land it would be known by now. Nobody misses a jet engine in the middle of the city.

5. That's assuming it was still there on impact.
Having a canada goose sucked up into a turbofan engine can cause a hell of a lot of damage, including the thing shredding itself.

15. Actually
A jet engine is designed for goose impact. It is supposed to contain all the damage internally. It may be disintegrated inside but it is definitely not supposed to fall off in flight. The adverse flight characteristics of unbalanced flight would make it extremely difficult to handle.

I would guess that the tugs dragging the plane along the bottom of the river probably knocked it off.

And leave the wing intact. (Regurgitating ABC News expert)

9. What's with the quotes around "missing"?
Is someone suggesting that the plane took off without the engine? That someone swooped down and stole it off the wing after take-off?

21. There was no plane, silly!
What, do you believe the "official coincidence theory????" How could you believe that after we've been lied to so much? All the pictures you saw of the plane are fakes, cheap and obvious video forgeries that were really of the Grand Finale episode of Gilligan's Island. Anybody who is not a total dupe for the Bush agenda - or worse... - knows that!

20. From what I've read
It's because he landed the plane so both wings touched the water at exactly the same time. What a hero that pilot is - I wish the city could do more than just give him the key.

Why do they need that to finish an investigation? We had 4 planes on 9/11 and not one of them were reconstructed and the investigation has been finished. Nothing to see here.

I'd bet broke off at impact or one of the boats knocked it off.

On edit: MSNBC has video of the plane in flight on their website. Can't see right engine but left is clearly still attached.

37. BOTH missing:
The two engines from the jetliner broke away from the plane and ended up at the bottom of the Hudson, mired in muck and thick sediment.

On Friday, the current was so swift and the water so cold that authorities could not hoist the plane out of the river to retrieve the flight data and voice recorders.

And those familiar with Hudson River searches said the engines could be nearly impossible to find if searchers are forced to feel about by hand in waters from 30 to 50 feet deep. Crews fanned out Friday in sonar boats to hunt for the wreckage.

....
Nothing strange about two missing engines, nothing at all. Happens all the time.

38. They come off rapidly when they impact something at high velocity.
They're only attached by a few bolts. Basically they're slung under the pylon, not hard-mounted.

40. Its only natural that they would break off on impact, there designed, to like someone said
A jet engine taking in a bird isn't going to just explode into tiny little pieces. Yeah it'd tear up the blades and ruin the whole insides of it. The engines are missing only cause of the impact.
