Crew Of Downed Plane To Media: Chill

The crew of the US Airways plane that landed in New York's Hudson River has asked the media to back off while the accident is being investigated.

Flight 1549's captain, Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger, first officer and co-pilot Jeff Skiles, and flight attendants Sheila Dail, Doreen Welsh and Donna Dent said in a joint statement Monday they want the media to "respect their desire to refrain from participating in interviews until further notice" while the National Transportation Safety Board investigates the accident.

The crew said they "wish to offer their sincere thanks and appreciation for the overwhelming support, praise and well wishes they have received from the public around the world since the events of last Thursday."

They said they are willing to do media interviews "when the time is right."

The statement was released by the US Airline Pilots Association - the US Airways pilots' union - and the Association of Flight Attendants.

1. The media is so out of control...

They're like rabid wolves, chasing stories like tabloid reporters.

I wish some of these reporters would redirect their energy to reporting the real
news and unearthing important stories. If they put as much fervor into being
journalists, as they do chasing stories about cranes toppling over--the world
would be a much better, less corrupt place.

...and you're right, it does come from the top down.

My biggest gripe is the chilling effect, that the mega-corporations that own the media, have
on keeping corruption and political crimes under wraps. Chances are, the big wigs
in the media are prep-school buddies or in the same cocktail-party circuit as the criminals
who have practically destroyed this country.

So, instead of journalism--we get cranes collapsing, planes crashing and blond girls
missing.

Also, I don't think these "reporters" are completely innocent. They don't have to work
in that environment. No one is forcing them to make a living out of keeping the truth
from the American people.

I have a degree in journalism, and no way in hell could I live with myself if I spent
most of my waking hours cheer-leading an illegal war, covering up for criminals and
toeing the line for my corporate masters--as I trudge off to cover another warehouse fire.

............crawling all over him to get an interview or just a smile. These cable networks this is how they make their money/living. That's why they take whatever they can get and televise it. I am for Obama and hope he (very leftish) succeeds, but the media is treating him like the fucking messiah and that bubble is gonna burst soon.

But I understand Sully is still going with his family. I understand the entire crew was invited. And don't write them off as Republicans. He went to the AF Academy a long time ago before the fundies. His wife said they'd be delighted to go to the inaugural.

At this point I couldn't care less about his politics.

16. The metaphor of what the crew did, positioned against BushCo is unforgettable.

The training, the skill, the resolve of the US Air crew, plus the skill of the
boat operators is in stark contrast to the pitiful, willfully poor performance of BushCo--in Katrina,
in the financial meltdown, Iraq reconstruction, in a million other examples.

I want America to work as effectively as the US Air and boating crews did---with
competence, resolve, and care for the American people and those whom we affect
around the world. No more 'stupid and proud of it' performances.
