Va. Tech stabbing suspect charged with murder

BLACKSBURG, Va. – A graduate student from China has been charged with murder in the fatal stabbing of a female student on Virginia Tech's campus, the first killing there since a deadly mass shooting in 2007.

An electronic alert system revamped after the massacre warned students to stay in place while police investigated the incident around 7:45 p.m. Wednesday — about half an hour after the suspect was taken into custody. They were cleared to resume normal activity about an hour later.

The woman, who was also a graduate student but was not identified, was stabbed to death at a cafe in the Graduate Life Center. Police believe she knew the man accused of attacking her, 25-year-old Haiyang Zhu, the school said in a news release. He was charged with first-degree murder and was being held without bond.

It was unclear early Thursday morning where he was being held or whether he had an attorney.

5. It's the size of a small city.
It has over thirty thousand enrolled students and faculty. Students alone outnumber the non-student population of Blacksburg by three to one. The median age of the "city" (in Virginia, any town which has a government separate from the county it is in is a "city") is about 21, so one could reasonably expect Vice City levels of mayhem.

In 2005, the national murder rate was 5.5 per 100,000. Since this is the first murder in over a year, Virginia Tech is statistically much safer than the national average.

And that's surprising to me, because I well know that while Blacksburg is a fun town with lots of fun people, the weather alone is enough to drive people insane. It rains more or less constantly from September to May, when school is in full session, which leaves students to indoor pursuits such as drinking, screwing, eating food coloring and projectile vomiting as a sport, and occasionally fighting. But oddly enough they don't kill one another nearly as much as one would expect. (One of my housemates threatened to kill me when I was there, but I'm hoping he forgot about it when he sobered up.)

As far as violent crime rates go, Virginia Tech compares favorably against the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, which is also a huge, hard-drinking school with shitty weather plopped into the middle of a small and comparatively remote town.

4. Ugh- the poor girl.
I wonder if this was a she rejected his advances so he killed her?

Two bright futures snuffed out in their prime.

I will never understand these things.
