EU experts to discuss France, Greece GM maize bans (Monsanto)
Source: Reuters

BRUSSELS, Jan 22 (Reuters) - European Union biotech experts will debate next month whether to order France and Greece to lift their bans on growing the only genetically crop authorised for cultivation on EU soil, officials said on Thursday.

Both countries have used legal provisions to prohibit cultivation of MON 810 maize developed by U.S. biotech company Monsanto (MON.N) but now face an order drafted by the European Commission, the EU executive, to repeal their national bans.

A committee of experts, representing the EU's 27 member countries plus Commission officials, will meet on Feb. 16 to vote on whether to approve both draft orders.

The Commission would need to secure a weighted majority of countries in favour of ordering France and Greece to lift the bans. There can also be a weighted majority against, when the Commission would withdraw the orders and reconsider.

2. The EU should ban McDonald's french fries . . .
before bio-corn. Somehow McD's french fries last forever.

3. This entire GM food thing scares me shitless, and it's NOT for health reasons.
Intellectual property over food?
Seeds that you have to buy from a corp over and over, and which yield infertile seeds?

That's evil. Mengele-level evil.

4. I feel the same way you do...
The terminator seed technology just creeps me out - like horror movie - "Stephen King" type creeps me out.

Does anybody ask - what happens when we stop using "natural" seed altogether to the point where there are not enough - what if there is a catastrophic failure of these GM seeds and we have nothing to turn to? Famine on a global scale. That is some scary shit.

I love science and technology. I'm in IT. I can get away from technology. But I also believe that just because you have the capability to do something does not mean you should. I feel that there is something morally wrong and inherently dangerous with GM seeds - and there is definitely something wrong with those evil fucks at Monsanto.

5. The manipulation itself doesn't bother me as much.
It's the whole attempt at monopolization.

Say there's some GM rice with added vitamins, and which is not a terminator seed. I people were free to grow it with no fear of lawsuits, I can't see why not. Of course, the same care with testing that applies to medicines (if not more!) should be exercised.

7. The Monsanto gurus need to…
Their attempts at gene modification are beyond the pale of anything Mengele ever conceived. Their legal attacks on “non compliance” farm entities are a disgrace to logic. Their court arguments regarding priority rights on crops are a joke.

Yet, somehow they still seem exist.
