Bridgestone Americas Tire Operations has announced it is ceasing production of consumer tires at its LaVergne plant and making additional layoffs in its truck tire production.

The tiremaker said Thursday it will eliminate 543 jobs in the consumer tire production side, some of which include employees who were part of a December layoff.

Also the company announced that it will reduce production of truck tires and will layoff 259 employees beginning in March.

The company had said in December it was considering this move sometime before the end of June due to the downturn in the economy.

Nashville, Tenn.-based Bridgestone Americas Tire Operations is a business unit of Bridgestone Americas Inc., whose parent company, Bridgestone Corp., is the world's largest tire and rubber company.

1. This company SUCKS! I am sorry for the job losses my husband
worked for Dayton/Bridgestone Firestone for 12 1/2 years. Lost his job to plant closure(plant moved to Mexico). 1200 people lost their Jobs in Oklahoma City. The good thing is they should have a better severance package than the employees in Oklahoma City did.

3. Tax 'em!
One of the main reason I voted for Obama was his promise to tax companies that send jobs out of the country. I'm happy with everything he's done in his first 24 hours, but this is the one promise I look forward to him fulfilling. My job is heading out of the country in a few months. Send jobs to Mexico to save you money? Not anymore, it won't. Let's get cracking on that, Mr. President.
