Judge upholds affirmative action ban

LINCOLN -- A judge today upheld Nebraska's ban on affirmative action, ruling that a petition drive to place the issue on the ballot was legal.

Voters approved the initiative in November, after opponents of the effort filed a lawsuit in Lancaster County District Court.

The constitutional amendment never uses the words “affirmative action.’’ But it prohibits state and local governments from giving preferential treatment to people on the basis of race, sex, ethnicity or national origin.

Ensuring that you have a diverse pool of applicants by targeting groups for recruitment is one way.

For example, if you want more African Americans in your company or University, you spend more money to advertise in places like Ebony Magazine. You send recruiters into African-American neighborhoods.

If you want to recruit more White people, you send recruiters to The Renaissance Faire.
