Ill. gov tells AP that strain is like Pearl Harbor

CHICAGO (AP) — Illinois' embattled but defiant governor turned to the history books to describe the emotional strain on him and his family, comparing his arrest last month to Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor.

"Dec. 9 to my family, to us, to me, is what Pearl Harbor Day was to the United States," Gov. Rod Blagojevich told The Associated Press in an interview Thursday. "It was a complete surprise, completely unexpected. And just like the United States prevailed in that, we'll prevail in this."

The two-term Democrat, speaking on a snowy sidewalk outside the office of one of his attorneys, said there was no chance he would resign before the start of his impeachment trial in the state Senate next week.

"I'm going to fight this to the very end," he said.

It was not a sneak attack - Blago knew he was under investigation, but like a lot of criminals, he had gotten away with it so long he thought he was invincible.

Is he at all aware that the Japanese attack on O'ahu on Dec. 7, 1941 was in no way confined to Pearl Harbor Naval Base? Even the execrable Ben Affleck film makes that point. The Japanese in 1941 didn't have "smart bombs", you see, and so bombs fell all over town, on people's saimin (noodle soup) stands, and even on what would later become my first neighborhood here (fortunately, it was not as built up at the time).

Amazingly, Pay-Rod the muskrat smuggler (you didn't think that was actually his hair, did you? :P ) has now even managed to tick us off, at a distance of some 4,000 miles. :eyes:
