WASHINGTON (AFP) — US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has telephoned the leaders of Israel and the Palestinian territories as well as the leaders of Afghanistan and Pakistan, spokesman Robert Wood said Friday.

Clinton called Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas as well as Afghan President Hamid Karzai, Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari, Wood told reporters.

She has also been in contact with Indian Foreign Minister Pranab Mukherjee.

"These were brief introductory calls," Wood said, adding "the secretary expressed the desire to work closely" with these leaders.

The leaders represent crisis-hit regions which are receiving high-priority diplomatic attention from the new administration of President Barack Obama.
