APCOLOMBO, Sri Lanka (AP) — Sri Lanka's army commander says the military has captured the Tamil Tiger rebels' last major stronghold of Mullaittivu in the country's northeast.
Lt. Gen. Sarath Fonseka said Sunday on national television that troops captured the town earlier in the afternoon. He said that the 25-year-old civil war was 95 percent over.
Many of the remaining rebel fighters were presumed to be in the nearby jungles of the northeast.
The fall of Mullaittivu would rob the rebels of the last major town under their control. The military captured the rebels administrative capital of Kilinochchi earlier this month and promised to crush the rebel group.
