Feds raid Lake Tahoe marijuana dispensary
Source: Lake Tahoe News

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. — Federal agents raided a medical marijuana dispensary in South Lake Tahoe on Thursday.

At about 11 a.m., five agents from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency — joined by members of the Bureau of Narcotic Enforcement, the South Lake Tahoe-El Dorado County Narcotics Enforcement Team and the South Lake Tahoe Police — served a federal search warrant on Patient to Patient Collective, located at 2314 Lake Tahoe Boulevard.

Agents seized between five and 10 pounds of processed marijuana and a “small amount” of U.S. currency from the collective, said DEA Special Agent Gordon Taylor.

Police made no arrests on Thursday.

Taylor declined to comment on additional details of the raid, saying Patient to Patient Collective is part of an ongoing investigation.

Physician-approved marijuana use for medical purposes has been declared legal in California since voters passed Proposition 215 in 1996.

This editorial has a good perspective on the issue IMO

Does Obama Have Control of the DEA?
Perspective by Tim King Salem-News.com

Has the time arrived for Obama to take his gloves off and overhaul the DEA from top to bottom, or is it even an option?
http://www.salem-news.com/articles/january232009/obama_dea_1-23-09.php

Most of the DEA members remain from the Bush Administration and they appear to still adhere to its policies, rather than those laid out by the new President.

(SALEM, Ore.) - The DEA is defying President Barack Obama's word that the Department of Justice would no longer be used to harrass and arrest owners and operators of medical marijuana dispensaries.

Obama has said he specifically does not support raids on cannabis dispensaries in states where laws have been passed making it legal. "I would not have the Justice Department prosecuting and raiding medical marijuana dispensaries; it is not a good use of our resources," then Presidential Contender Obama said, on August 21st 2007.

The group Americans for Safe Access reports that on Thursday, the Drug Enforcement Administration, still mostly comprised of officials from the Bush Administration, raided a medical cannabis dispensary in South Lake Tahoe, California.

"They did so knowing full well that President Obama has repeatedly pledged to end federal threats, arrests, and prosecutions of patients and their providers in medical cannabis states," the ASA's George Pappas said.

Obama has stated on more than one occasion that he is not interested in locking up non-violent drug offenders as felons which leads to no good prospects except drug dealing and other criminal activity. Obama said in September 2007, that he believes when it comes to offenders, "they become more locked into crime from being in prison."

heard on On The Media this am. Lots of snickering about it with the implication that of course that ain't gonna happen. Until one of their kids get slammed for it, then suddenly they will wake the fuck up. Too late of course.

It is very similar to change.gov, only it's run by citizens. Legalizaing marijuna is in the top ten there, as well.

Now people are directly putting input towards marijuana legalization. Sure it might not seem enough at the moment, but this is a pretty remarkable start to end this foolishness.

In this society 'we' have so many ways to alter consiousness(needed) and many that are legal and justified are much more harmful than this particular herb. I can only shake my head and hope we grow up soon.

3. Legalize it, regulate it, and TAX it. Not too onerously, just "enough."
Sell it in packs of one, two, or five, pre-rolled and in varying blends.

Frankly, it would be easier to just do it across the country, federally, rather than state by state, doing it piecemeal, like they are now. If the states don't want it, the law can be written so that the states can opt out--like dry counties do.

Require federal tax stamps, and get people on tax law if they don't have 'em.

Sell it in liquor stores.

We'd be able to repair the infrastructure in no time, AND put those "south of the border" drug lords out of the pot business, anyway.

Massachusetts just fines people now. They get a ticket--don't even go to court. Easy revenue. Cops don't have to leave their beat to testify. Result is the same, less work on the courts, everyone is happier.

8. $11 to $100 million pours into California in sales tax revenue from medical marijuana
http://www.examiner.com/x-1960-LA-City-Buzz-Examiner~y2009m1d24-11-to-100-million-pours-into-California-in-sales-tax-revenue-from-medical-marijuana-more-possible

The medical marijuana industry has already put $11-100 million in the state treasury, depending on whose numbers you use. In Marijuana Inc.Thursday night, CNBC reported California “collected more than 11 million dollars in sales tax revenue, 300 thousand from just one Oakland dispensary alone " Americans for Safe Access in California say their estimates are “one hundred million dollars in sales tax revenue” per year could be collected by the state from marijuana distribution points, or dispensaries, in the state alone.

It is hard to get accurate numbers as to how many dispensaries there are in the state today and how much revenue they bring in, BECAUSE of interference from the federal government in the last eight years.

“Part of the problem is the federal government has been continuing to exercise federal law in California,” said Kris Hermes, of Americans for Safe Access, headquared in Oakland. “In the last couple of years we experienced a significant number of raids on dispensaries, over a hundred throughout the state."

He says DEA agents “closed down a number of businesses. Then others open and want to avoid scrutiny.”

And this is just from medical marijuana. Just think of how much could be generated if the policy were expanded to recreational use.

They should sell it like cigs and I would gladly spend $40.00 for a pack. Can't go wrong for $2.00 a joint. I've been saying this for years. They should legalize prostitution too. It would save a lot of marriages and make a shit load of money like pot.

none of this trafficking could be happening without the assistance of high government

At the highest levels there has to be approval for this and it's a big gold mine of

You have to be careful with that phrase!

I think we just need some courage in Congress. Barney Frank says "legalize it." All he needs is a few more high-profile advocates, preferably ones who don't use it themselves--that's how they got it down to a fine in MA. Police chiefs supported decrimialization because it was a waste of their officers' time having to fart around in court all day. Way easier to write a ticket and move on, collect the revenue, and collect the "goods," too.

9. Marijuana is a non-toxic herbal remedy.
It can relief nausea, chronic pain, and spasms. It has mental health benefits as well, as medical users are discovering. Because the feds won't reschedule cannabis and fund scientific studies, medical users, caregivers and growers are discovering and documenting the benefits themselves. It can help with bipolar disorder, depression, ADHD, and ADD.
Some research suggests that it could be a powerful treatment for brain tumors and other cancers.

I don't want it to be put in the same class as tobacco or alcohol. This is not tobacco or alcohol. It is non-toxic. Nobody has ever died from an overdose of marijuana.

The only government involvement I want is for them to legalize it, then license growers. Let them sell it to people who don't grow it for themselves. Let those who grow for themselves continue to grow it. It belongs to us, not to the government.

64. I've never heard of anybody missing work ....
Ever heard of a mean pot head who beats the wife and kids?

Ever heard of someone killing a family of 4 on the highway because they were stoned? (Though this may have happened...there is a ratio to consider)

No one has ever smoked themselves to death.

Remember, Heath and Anna Nicol had prescriptions for all the drugs that killed them.

But of course Pot is a drug and seems to affect short term memory and motivation...though I'm not sure if these effect linger after the high is gone.

But compared to, say Tylenol!....

It was Grace Slick who once stated that everyone she'd ever smoked pot with couldn't handle it in the long run, with but one exception (and she never said who that one person was/is).

I'm sure they're out there, but I know *very* few successful people who are pot heads (pot head being quite different than a person who may smoke one or two joints a year...). But then again, I'm sure a lot of people will turn right around and tell me about all the multi-millionaires they know who smoke three or four joints a day.

(Disclaimer-- I am neither admitting to or denying any possible pot use of my own)

Not saying successful pot-heads don't exist, merely saying I personally don't know any-- nothing to get hung about. No big deal, right?

I also don't personally know any successful meth-heads, coke-heads, or heroin addicts-- but I imagine plenty of people will say they know literally dozens of them...

17. I've been doing a little research on drug scheduling
It doesn't really fit into any of the current schedules, certainly not Schedule I along with Meth and the like. IMO they should create a new schedule for drugs that are medically beneficial AND non-toxic. Cannabis may be the only drug listed, but at least it would finally fit the definition. It wouldn't even have to be officially legalized, just rescheduled.

I also wondered who schedules the drugs and apparently scheduling is the sole discretion of the DEA. That's obviously a major problem.

33. I think both apply, Merlot. They are doing what they've been trained to do and enjoy
doing. Big raid with all their para-military gear on, looking like badasses, while they round up reefer and a few dollars from clerical/medical types. That would be funny if it weren't so sick.

Also they probably figure they might as well have as much "fun" as they can while they can.

The other element is the force-Obama's-hand part, which is probably an attempt to make this a high-profile "moral issue" (you know, drug addiction scary scary and all) so Limpballs and Orally and crew can work the fundies into a frenzy. They're hoping it'll cause the self-righteous public to turn against our new President.

Here's the irony: Lots of the freepers that I know smoke pot. I doubt they're gonna get all incensed (pardon the pun) because Obama wants to lighten up on the pot laws.

Watch the Documentary "Grass", I just was watching it again.
The amount of money spent since 1926 is just insane.

31. Eric Holder is needed right now !
Edited on Sun Jan-25-09 05:13 PM by jaysunb
The repukes have offered many reasons for holding up his confirmation, and this is just another example of the lawlessness of the Bush administration.

These raids are nothing more than legal robbery. When they did it at the local dispensary I go to, to owners told me that they were not even cited, but the money and the weed along w/ their records that verify customer status and info were seized.
The supposed order contained information of loud and rowdy behavior that occured and was observed more that 6 months before they move to the location.
The "judge" that signed the order has been retired from the bench for more than 3 years.

So, you be the judge.

I say it's nothing more than robbery.

76. That is only if Holder is kept in check
Holder has a long history of supporting stronger punishment for marijuana, and he does not support medical use.
If Holder does it Holder's way, this sort of news will get more common not less. Obama has made a bunch of direct promises, but he has picked a lunatic drug warrior for AG.
Assuming Holder will be better is a mistake. Obama must be held to his word, not allowed to wander off with Holder down that rabbitt hole.

I don't blame Obama for this either, but someone needs to put these renegades down asap. The people whose suffering this exacerbates cannot wait.

36. Bastards! I hate SLEDNET
there are plenty of folks up here (I have friends who work for the city govt, etc) who know that much of the stuff "confiscated" ends up in the hands of the SLT Police and such, for personal use...ESPECIALLY when no arrests are made and the investigation is "ongoing"

I have driven by the "patient to patient collective" several times, and never once knew they were a dispensary. They aren't advertising, no pot leaves on the front door or signage. In fact I thought it was a "free clinic" type of thing, which we desperately need because so many are losing jobs and there isn't alot of options for healthcare up here. Perhaps that IS where medical Marijuana comes in handy...on many levels.

Busting such a mall dispensary os just bullshit, flexing muscles to keept he population in fear...PURE propaganda, nothing more.

Pricks, can't they find some REAL criminals to go after?

42. As many problems as this country has, and the DEA is arresting people for selling weed
The DEA is arresting people selling a plant that grows wild in this country. I find it hard to believe that collecting a weed, burning it and inhaling the smoke is illegal.

And to top it off, people who are sick want to burn this plant because it helps them.

pursing state-legal dispensaries. If the Feds will not decriminalize pot, they should at least leave it to the states to decide how to handle it.

47. Local news had a story on about how the farmers in East Tennessee are suffering.
Tune 'em in turn 'em on and let them grow both Hemp and Marijuana. The tractor company they interviewed said they usually make 1300 per year and have cut that down to 800 ! Green Jobs, and tractor sales need stimulating in East Tennessee. http://www.wisecountyissues.com I'd much rather see hemp and marijuana growing on what's left of our mountains instead of bombing and blasting them to smithereens.

69. Exactly - everyone should see Kevin Booth's awesome movie American Drug War
The whole drug-war is not just bullshit, it's meant to keep us all down while giving the CIA tons of black-ops money off the books. But the movie is about more than that and is one of the best I've ever seen on the subject.

54. just want to point out-campaign promises are not laws, or executive orders.
agree with everyone here on this issue, just want to point out that the writer of that article is woefully uninformed if they think that people just go off and change policy based on every statement made on the campaign trail. stupid.

78. Sorry kid
A man's word is his word, and a lie is a lie. He made direct promises, and gave the reasons for those promises. If he does not keep his word, he's a liar, who will say anything for his own agenda, and it is that simple. A campaign does not mean that when asked a question, the reply is meaningless or that the candidate is released from ethical and honest speech. A lie is a lie, and a lie told for personal gain is not 'politics' it is amoral.
So you can sit and say that a promise is of no value, but millions intend to hold him to his word, or remove our support from him. If he won it with a lie, it was never really his.
I dispise a liar, and one who rationalizes his lies even more. He breaks this clear promise, I will never listen to a word he says again. Trust gained can be lost. A liar is a liar is a liar. A lie is a lie.

79. you completely misunderstood my post.
i am not saying that i think he is backing out. i am just saying that agency policy, or laws, do not change because a candidate made a statement, or a promise and is subsequently elected. either legislation must be passed, or an executive order must be issued in order for the agencies to change their policies. laws and policies don't just automatically change based on campaign promises.
