Netanyahu Would Let West Bank Settlenents Expand

JERUSALEM (AP) -- The front-runner in Israel's election said in an interview published Monday that he would let Jewish settlements expand in the West Bank if he's elected prime minister, threatening to put him at odds with the Obama administration.

The remarks by hawkish Likud Party leader Benjamin Netanyahu come just before the new U.S. special envoy to the Middle East, George Mitchell, is scheduled to visit Israel, the West Bank and elsewhere this week for talks aimed at keeping alive a fragile Gaza cease-fire and reviving Mideast peace negotiations.

Mitchell is a critic of Israel's West Bank settlements, which are a key issue in peace talks.
Mitchell is expected to meet with Israeli leaders, including Netanyahu. President Barack Obama has pledged to dive into Israeli-Palestinian peacemaking at the beginning of his term.

1. For any who aren't yet aware: Likudniks are Israel's version of Neo-conservatives
Edited on Mon Jan-26-09 04:45 PM by Idealism
Netanyahu is a warmonger bent on pushing the Palestinians out of the West Bank and into the sea. He won the Prime Minister slot in the 1990s in part on the platform of rejecting the Oslo Accords. He has been proven to be a detriment to peace in the Middle East and if he gets elected next month, the two-state solution will be pushed back another decade at least.

2. Just like I thought
After he said that he's not going to have the government build new settlements, I figured he meant that he'd give free reign to the settlers to do so.

I alsways hate it when I'm right about Israel and Palestine. It's never good to be right when you're a cynic

5. Ah, more land theft. Unsurprising.
Wonder how long until this thread is shunted off to the ghetto -- always a cowardly move, IMHO.

7. More support for my belief that the Likud types (starting with Menachem Begin)
are purposely trying to piss off the Palestinians so they have a further excuse to take military action against them.

The settlements make no sense otherwise and never have.

14. Given what I saw on 60 Minutes last night...
(not to mention what I already knew), the Palestinians are a very patient people.

8. Well, hell! Then I think WE should go squat in Israel. We give them enough money.
Edited on Mon Jan-26-09 07:05 PM by McCamy Taylor
I am going to pack up and move and build myself a house wherever I damn well feel like it and double dog dare them to do anything about it. My government the United States has more nukes than Israel.

See how they like having strangers moving in to their backyard. I'll practice Wiccan rituals outdoors, set up a model of Stonehenge. Maybe a big fertility goddess. Ishtar. She predates their god of fire. Or how about one of those really big Buddhas?

12. The Israeli Bushies will do anything to undermine Obama and bring him down.
Edited on Mon Jan-26-09 07:41 PM by tom_paine
They are part and parcel of our own Bushies, almost indistinguishable from them.

I see that now.

I pity Israel, under such a yoke of tyranny, and so politically naive that they watched the Bushies off their JFK, Yitzhak Rabin, using the same old "lone gunman" bit for "plausible deniability".

And now the Israeli Bushies, apparently relying on the fact that Israelis almost certainly cannot fathom that their leaders are Nazi-Bushie Monsters, started their little Election Psyops war in suhc an openly shameless fashion.

They know they don't have to worry about suspicion. The Israeli Bushies know they can kill at least one or maybe two more Rabins, if they had to, before the sheep even BEGIN to suspect.

I strongly suspect the Bushie Mossad has been working with the Bushies for quite some time, and that every Democratic President since the Bushies took over Israel probably has been undermined in this treasonous Bushie fashion, which is commonplace for Bushies. Treason to their country is Bushie Loyalty to themselves, and that's the end of that in the Authoritarian Mind.

13. It seems like I have been hearing for years that Netanyahu would be coming back into power.
I'm as pro-Israel of a person as you are going to find, but Netanyahu is a complete prick.

15. since when did the Israeli's need approval to make the settlements?
I watched the story on 60 minutes and it appears they do whatever they damn well please......take over houses when they want to....build settlements when and where they want to...build walls through farmers land...and we helped by acting as if they can do no wrong. (IMO)
