Pittsburgh 27 Arizona 23
Source: The Sun

PITTSBURGH came back from the brink of defeat to beat Arizona and secure their sixth Super Bowl title.
With just 35 seconds left on the clock and trailing 23-20, Steelers quarterback Roethlisberger flung a pass into the very corner of the end zone and Santonio Holmes came down on the very tips of his toes with the ball in his hands.

Congrats to all Pittsburgh fans. Congrats too, to Arizona fans. Your team played a HELL of a game.

5. Arizona got screwed so many times - the refs completely threw the game
Steelers definitely had to have offered the refs something. Arizona got screwed hard on a lot of plays that should have been reviewed or just called differently.

require you to be pulling the dude to the ground, and he wasn't). that gave the ball back to the steelers. and roughing the holder was a bad call---he fell on him and worst of all the booth did not review the final play! boo!

67. Funny. In Pittsburgh that the only reason we dont have 20 Superbowls
It is almost canonized in the Steel City that the league intentionally held the steelers out of the superbowl, since, well '81, through the nineties. "The league doesnt want us to have the most superbowl rings." Some years it was hard to deny. Just ask my uncle.

SGT PASTO - Pittsburgh native and happy they won against an offense they could barely slow down.

82. I see I've found the sour grapes thread.
You'd feel right at home at the Arizona Republic's comments section. It's so farcical that every time the Steelers win, the opposing team got jobbed. The Steelers paid the officials to call the game in their favor. Yeah, RIGHT! Claiming cheating is really "the last refuge of a scoundrel," with patriotism running a distant second. I counted at least three FLAGRANT facemask grabs by Cardinals O linemen that were ignored completely. And holding in the END ZONE, for a SAFETY? Puh-leeze! Looks like the zebras forgot who was payin' 'em on that one.

:toast:

16. My take: the defensive player grabbed his arm when the passing arm was back, then
Warner lost control. The movement forward was caused by the tackler pushing the arm forward.

When it did move forward, rolling out of your hand does not constitute "control of the ball"

The "forward motion" of his arm looked clearly like an attempt to recapture the ball rather than the forward motion of an intentional pass.

Edited on Sun Feb-01-09 10:36 PM by Hissyspit
He said the bird was quite scary, an eye-shadow-wearing pecker, but that any team who would have a logo as stupid and dated looking as the Steelers could come out on the field and be crazy animals. Ferguson has quite the record of success.

85. I really don't know who Craig Ferguson is,
but just how is the Steelers' helmet logo "dated" and "stupid"? I can see dated, if you want to take issue with the Steelers symbolizing the long lost Pittsburgh steel industry. I prefer to see it as "classic."

You could make a case that ALL nfl helmet logos are "stupid" and/or "dated."

Cleveland: doesn't even HAVE a logo. How stupid is THAT? And never even been to the Super Bowl.
Baltimore: Your raven is purple. That's stupid.
Cincinnati: doesn't look like real tiger stripes. Stupid.
Tennessee: What has a flamimg circle with a "T" in it havae to do with those mythical figures, the Titans? Stupid.
Jacksonville: Anyone ever actually seen a jaguar in that city? I thought not. Stupid.
Indianapolis: Same logo they used in Balitmore. Dated.
Arizona: a docile little red bird. Stupid.

25. Our Cardinals SUCKED
They fell apart from the first kickoff, and I knew we were going to lose.

If anything, Steelers fans ought to be ashamed that the Steelers didn't win BIG, by a huge margin. The way Arizona was playing, any other team would have beaten us by at least 20.

I've been a Cardinals fan all my life, but I'm so ashamed of them right now, that I have literally given up on them completely. I'm no longer a fan. I can't support a team that makes it to the Super Bowl, only to collapse under the slightest pressure.

This was the worst Super Bowl ever, from the game to the commercials to Springsteen's hoarse, unintelligible caterwauling during halftime. Pretty bad when the best thing about a Super Bowl is Faith Hill. :puke:

28. I concur
If the Steelers had lost, it would have been a defeat by an entirely worthy team.

Both teams had weak moments: Pittsburgh's personal fouls are simply unacceptable, costing them 60 yards (or more?) and making some of them look like assholes.

The Cards represented themselves very well, and the Holmes-to-Fitzgerald plays were close to unstoppable. In fact, they often weren't stopped, which is why the game was so close.

you think someone in the USA or several foreign nations doesn't have a television?

This thread is what I would call internet spam.

Go do your thing about football, which kills athletes 20 years earlier than their expected life span because of head trauma..undetected, until their death.........

Football lovers, it's about time you woke up, this is NOT a clean sport, nor something Americans should worship.

IMO it's one step away from gladiatorial battles in Rome in 300 AD.......think about it, and do some Google searches about that time and that venue, if you don't know how to figure out how we are killing each other and our nation.

This thread is inappropriate....and you should know that.

Actually, a little-known dark side of football is that the losing team is at this very minute being butchered and prepared so that, for dinner tomorrow, the victorious Steelers can literally feast upon the Cardinals' defeat.

It will be sold as a Pay-Per-View event.

68. Hey Jay- This thread is where I found out who won
Edited on Mon Feb-02-09 12:47 AM by NBachers
I don't pay attention to football and I didn't watch any of the game; basically I don't really care much about it. But it's important to a lot of people and I was curious about who won. I watched the Obama show on 60 Minutes, but the "sports wrap" commercial had absolutely nothing about who won the Super Bowl. I checked out DU, and here it was.

I'm not anti-football, it just doesn't mean much to me. But for you to grouse that this thread is "inappropriate" is way over the line.

I live in San Francisco. There's a huge population here that's rabid about the other "football" - you know, soccer. They'll drive in procession down Mission Street with huge flags of their country flying out the window, honking and cheering and making a huge commotion. Soccer's not much of a thing with me, but they're entitled to their team loyalty.

Football to me is brutal, excessive, and contrived phony consumerism. But most people like it. Don't condemn them, dude. Nobody's saying anything inappropriate on this thread.

70. I just wanted to wave ...
Edited on Mon Feb-02-09 01:20 AM by AsahinaKimi
To a fellow San Franciscan! :hi:
oh, and yes while there are many into the European style of football,
we still have the 49er Faithful, who loved going to the Parades during
the 1980's and seeing those Gold and Red Balloons tied to the top of
City Hall. So, despite our city's reputation, we have many sports fans here.
I remember once going to the Cow Palace for a Hockey Game as well.

72. Yup. My brother-in-law grew up near Candlestick Park
He was a cushion-guy as a kid, so he got into the games for free. He attended the '87 World Series with Barry Melton and Mickey Hart. He was around for the '80's glory years; he still has 49'er and Giants season tickets. My son's teacher was Ms. Banaszek; her dad Cas Banaszek was a famous '49'er lineman and Super Bowl alumnus. He used to come and coach Phys Ed, and all the kids were enthralled by his Superbowl ring.

I've been to Pac Bell Park to see Giants games; I think it's absolutely the best baseball park anyone could ever have.

Yeah, I'm not putting down sports fans. My dad was a huge sports guy. I get more involved with the local teams than what's going around elsewhere. Our local Bay Area teams always give us a good run, nearly every season. And I still like Barry.

Last weekend, my son met some friends at the Double Play, at 16th and Brannan. As I drove him & his friend over there, I told the story of Seals Stadium, and all the old breweries nearby. The Double Play's the last holdout from those days.

Since I live in the Mission, I've got a front-row seat for the chaos and excitement that breaks out over important Soccer victories.

So thanks for the wave, AsahinaKimi. I'll keep my eye out for posts from you.

Some people DVR the games because they have to work. Thanks for ruining the super bowl a-hole.

And I heard that the media have agreed to a one-week moratorium on reporting about it, so that the TiVo/DVR crowd can watch at their leisure.

41. What?
Why would you hold this person responsible for ruining the score for you? As soon as I opened the internet, my homepage told me who won and what the score was. If you didn't want to know then you probably shouldn't have logged on. And you really should refrain from calling people names.

51. Yeah you are right. But what if people post sports scores in latest breaking news all the time?
I'm a Texas Rangers fan, but I don't post their games scores in LBN. I don't expect to see sports scores here. By the way, I watched the game live. I was thinking about others that may have been at work.

The Superbowl--the biggest television event of the year (well, maybe second biggest, this year) ended shortly before the OP of this thread.

It is, by definition, Latest Breaking News.

102. It was TOO exciting...
had any other team been playing, I would say "good game". But when my team plays, I want a blow out. When I Turner got that personal foul for roughing up a receiver after they were out of bounds I almost hit the TV. That was a stupid, potentially game costing penalty.

49. AZ got screwed...
Twice, Big Ben should have been called for grounding.

Roughing the holder??? Seriously???

...and that last one, Warner's arm was moving forward.

There's no reason why into the 4th quarter, it was Pittsburgh 3 for 30 and AZ 9 for 96 in penalties.

I've seen bad officiating, but this was a screwjob through and through.

56. My Thoughts
First Congratulations to the World Champion Steelers and also a very game Cardinal team.
Well It was a great game. I did say that Fitzgerald would make one huge play and he did, and it looked like a Game Winner.
I also said that Ben Roethlisberger does not put up big numbers but makes big plays and he did
And that is what a Champion does and he is one,
I did think that Tomlin deciding to go for a Field goal in the 1st Quarter was a big mistake, and it looked like that was going to be the difference. But in the end if the Steelers did not have those 3 points than all the Cards would have needed was a Field Goal to win.
As far as the game itself, looking at it as a fan of Football this was as good of a game as last year and some of the other games the past several years.

64. Amazing Game!
I know Warner is a "christer" but I find myself being a huge fan of his. I was pulling for both teams, so I ended up being very pleased with the game in the end. One of the best Super Bowls I can remember since I became aware of football a good 23+ years ago. :)

69. Congrats Steelers!!!!
The Jets are my first love, but I lived in Pitt suburbs for a couple of years, so I've supported the black & gold for a long time!!!

Arizona does have some legitimate grips(two missed intentional groundings and the roughing the passer call but no, not the fumble), but they played an amazing 4th quarter and can hold the heads up high. I won't be sleeping on these guys anymore!

  • Did The Boss have any "wardrobe failures" during halftime?

94. Great game, but still doesn't hold a candle to last year's SB. . .
The Steelers were favored by many to win...and they did, but not without a good fight from the Cardinals.
:bounce:
Hardly anybody gave the NY Giants a chance to win against the then 18-0 NE Patriots - and, of course, "The Play" will be talked about for ages.
:bounce:

Gotta give credit, though, to the Rooney family. Like the Mara family in NY, they have enough sense as owners to stay away from the day-to-day stuff and let the people they hire do their jobs. The multiple Super Bowl wins of both franchises speak for themselves.

99. Well THIS lifelong Steeler fan and Bruce fan is happy happy today
And a tip of the hat to the Cardinals, who I really thought were going to do us in. It was too close for comfort, but a great finish. I know Cards fans don't feel that way, but hey, the Steelers wandered in the desert for 40 years before winning a Superbowl (my dad told me the stories when I was a kid about the Steelers being the joke of the NFL).
