Witnesses: Shoe thrown at Chinese prime minister
Source: AP

CAMBRIDGE, England—Witnesses say a protester has thrown a shoe at China's Wen Jiabao during a speech at Cambridge University.

The protester was sitting in the crowd and threw the shoe after standing and shouting: "How can you listen to this unchallenged?"

The shoe missed the leader by a large margin and he was unhurt. The incident was similar to one involving former President George W. Bush during his last visit to Iraq.

9. Hopefully not, as it didn't happen in China, but during the Chinese leader's visit to the UK.

10. Bull shit screws with people's aim
It's obvious, exposure to whatever bull is being spewed by the target destroys any aiming potential. It's like a kind of shield. No wonder BS is spewed so much in this world.

12. Shoe hurled as Chinese PM speaks
Source: BBC News

**********

A protester has thrown a shoe at Wen Jiabao during a speech at Cambridge University and called the Chinese prime minister a "dictator".

The shoe landed about a metre away from Mr Wen and the protester, a young man, was then removed by security guards.

...

According to eye-witnesses, Mr Wen was interrupted near the end of a speech he was giving in Cambridge on the global economy.

According to the Press Association, the shoe was thrown from the back of the hall and landed "well away" from Mr Wen. Reuters reported that the protester urged the audience to challenge the Chinese prime minister, shouting "how can the university prostrate itself with this dictator?"

15. So is this supposed to be the new "thing" now?
It was effective against Bush because it was new. Now it's just so very 2008, and repeated use of this form of protest will weaken its effectiveness.

17. Maybe they should throw other things than a shoe. Throwing a shoe, or showing the soles has
significance in Arab culture. Not so much in Chinese culture.

Maybe the protestor should have thrown a bag of Ramen noodles.

18. Cheese.
A great many Chinese find cheese absolutely disgusting. A nice aged Roquefort or Limburger should do nicely.

And the shoe toss at Bush would have been much more fun if the shoes had had cleats, and if they had connected with his monkey-face.

One even complained that she thinks Americans must melt cheese onto everything.
