Further FARC hostage releases in doubt
02/02 19:59 CET

The International Red Cross say the proposed handover of Colombian politician Alan Jara, held by FARC rebels since 2001, will not go ahead as planned.

However, the Red Cross remains confident both Jara and fellow politician Sigifredo Lopez will be liberated at some point.

On Sunday FARC released four “political” hostages to the Red Cross and a Colombian team led by opposition senator Piedad Cordoba.

FARC said the releases were a humanitarian gesture.

Jara was the next in line to be freed.

However, the deal appears to have been scuppered after Cordoba and her team complained of Colombian military activity in the area after they were assured it would stop until the release of the hostages was secured.

2. That's the picture we get, isn't it? Also happened when they bombed the area previous hostages
were trying to pass through when they were scheduled to be released, and they were so afraid they ran as fast as they could back to their point of origin. That happened, too, with Uribe's promise they would be allowed safe passage.

3. this is behavior you would expect from a deranged drug fiend
after all, Uribe was an integral part of the Medellín narcoterrorist cartel. Uribe's father was a well-known trafficker in the department of Antioquia before his death in 1983. The younger Uribe became the mayor of this drug-infested city with Pablo Escobar's blessings the previous year in 1982 (incidentally, Sr. Escobar was a Congressman then, in 1982, he even visited the White House as a tourist).

When the Minister of Justice, Rodrigo Lara Bonilla, was able to run Escobar out of office, he was gunned down the following year. His replacement was shot in exile in Budapest.

It is generally beleived that Galán, who was also assassinated, would have won the first election against Uribe for the presidential race.

Uribe won elections simply because all the opposition figures were conveniently gunned down in the streets.

4. the hostage release was delayed for about 6 years
other hostage releases have been "delayed" about 10 years. the FARC can release the hostages at any time.

5. Baloney. FARC can release hostages "any time" if they want the same
to be put into mortal danger. Who do you think you're kidding?

The only releases the Uribe government wants is the photo - op kind where he comes off as some kind of hero and not the butcher he is.

8. FARC doesn't open fire on their OWN hostages during releases
and they don't bring camera crews to them either.

But thank you for your considered opinion, as always.

10. We were talking about the release of hostages.
To which you have no response because it's been obvious for some time that Colombia has been trying to tank them.

11. the FARC is free to release hostages at any time they like. they don't even have to tell anyone
they can just drop them off at a dirt road, tell them where to walk to the nearest town, and there you go.

you do think the FARC should release all the hostages don't you??

12. You can't even be taken seriously, after all the information at your disposal,
when you make such a statement. But, that's cool. To each, his own.

15. Of course FARC can let their hostages go any time
But FARC wants the publicity that goes along with quasi-public hostage releases.

They believe the releases can persuade the easily gullible and feeble-minded that they aren't a ruthless criminal enterprise after all.

They may have a point.

14. FARC hostage escapes and 3 days later he is found by Colombian soldiers

this guy and his rebel deserter are still alive. some seem to be suggesting that the FARC is "protecting" the hostages from certain death by the military. I guess that wasn't the case here.

here is another guy who escaped and wandered for 17 days before an army patrol found him. and the military didn't kill him. imagine that!!!
