ACLU Sues to End Ban on Anti-Drug-Law Ads

WASHINGTON - The American Civil Liberties Union (news - web sites) sued the transit authority in the nation's capital Wednesday, saying its refusal to display paid advertisements that criticize anti-marijuana laws violated free speech rights.

The lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court, says the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority acted unconstitutionally when it declined last week to run the ads at subway and bus stops.

The ads were sponsored by the ACLU and three groups joining the lawsuit: Change the Climate, the Drug Policy Alliance and the Marijuana Policy Project, which support the use of marijuana for medical purposes.

1. It's about time!!!!!

Drug laws fail to meet a fundamental issue in civil rights.

An action that does NOT result in the loss of OTHERS rights is considered an infringement of civil liberty. In the case of drug prohibition, the enforcement is actually more harmful than the original phenomenon. It leads to a drug distribution model that ENCOURAGES new addictions by subsidizing the "first hit".

Marijauna prohibition is 100% idiotic. The substance really isn't that harmful. The drug itself is easily cultivated. More Marijauna is grown domestically than smuggled in. It also results in prohibition of hemp which could be a major cash crop for tobacco farmers wishing to diversify their crop.

Once marijauna is in liquor stores with the other "benign" substance, it will be HARDER for kids to get.

3. STOP STOP You are making so much sense

Maybe, just maybe, if we could redirect all weed-busting efforts to prosecuting rapists and other sexual offenders (especially against children), there might be some respect for the "justice" that is doled out in our criminal courts.

Maybe those law enforcement officials could stop spending their efforts on reefer dealers and get some car thieves. Ooooo better yet, some Enron thieves. Oh, I forgot. That's a "civil" crime.

I always thought it was silly anyway but now that we have a war on Terror and all I have little patience for a drug war on our wn people.

INS seems to be an important part of protecting our people.

7. Every illegal

Every illegal occupant should be considered a potential terrorist.

We have an immigration problem because we REFUSE to enforce immigration law. The left thinks it's inhuman. The right likes the cheap labor.

Part of any program should be aggresive advertising in Mexican border towns alerting potential border hoppers that they WILL be deported if they're found whether that be 5 miles from the border, or Chicago.

Once they see hordes of deported immigrants returning, they will realize that border skipping is futile. Hopefully, Mexicans will seek redress from THEIR government instead of middle class Americans. Let Pancho Villa rise again!!!!!

2. It is about time ...if they want to go after drugs why not the more

dangerous type instead of Marijuana. Also they should go after all these legal drugs that they advertise 24/7..tell your doctor if you have liver problems...If your doctor does not know how would you. STUPID, STUPID AND STUPID.
