U.K. Officer Arrested in Afghanistan on Suspicion of Leaks
Source: Bloomberg

Feb. 4 (Bloomberg) -- Britain’s military arrested an officer in Afghanistan on suspicion of leaking official secrets.

The British officer, who wasn’t identified, was being flown back to the U.K., where the case may investigated by London’s Metropolitan Police, the Ministry of Defense said today in an e- mailed statement. The officer is suspected of breaching the Official Secrets Act.

A police spokeswoman said the force is considering whether to investigate the matter.

The Sun newspaper reported today that the officer is suspected of leaking figures about civilian deaths in coalition military operations to a worker from a human rights group.

We can't have the truth about civilian deaths leaking out, now can we?

1. Can't really see him being tried here
Would create far too much bad publicity aside from which I'm guessing he'd use necessity as a defence.

2. Transparency is better. Why does this kind of statistic have to be a secret?

What it means is that the UK knows the number.
If they know the number there, wouldn't the U.S. know the number also. Is it also a secret in for the U.S.?

If the UK and US know the numbers in Afganistan, they must have known them in Iraq. Were/are they a secret in Iraq?

The French gave up war in Indo-China, Vietnam. But the U.S. thought they could do better.
The US went to Iraq and liked it so much they went back.
The Russians gave up on Afganistan, but the UK and US think they can do better.
Just the big picture.

The U.S., UK, Israel = invaders.
