Chinese scientists clone 5 human embryos for research
Asia-Pacific News
Feb 4, 2009, 13:08 GMT

Beijing - A Chinese team of scientists has succeeded in cloning five human blastulas for research purposes, the Shandong Stem Cell Engineering Research Center disclosed Wednesday.

At a press conference held jointly with a hospital in Yantai, the experiment created five blastual clones from 135 eggs. A blastula is an embryo in the early stage of development.

Of the five blastulas, four were from skin fibrocytes of healthy donors while the fifth was from lymphocytes of patients with Parkinson disease, the researchers said in a press release.

Research team leader Li Jianyuan said the new cloning technolyg was expected to aid in the medical treatment of patients suffering, among others, from Parkinsons disease.

6. Cloning is way too expensive as a way to produce warriors

It can be done practically for free in the back seat of a parked car.

20. Straw man
Edited on Thu Feb-05-09 04:38 PM by muriel_volestrangler
These are blastulas, a few days after conception, not 'someone'.

Oh, and since the Chinese were the victims of WW2 medical experiments, your straw man is particularly inappropriate.

13. What about the one child policy?
Seriously, with the one child policy they still feel the need to clone a human five times to get research material? What about all those illegal second and third child pregnancies? Surely they can be recycled into the lab.

16. This is about medical research
Blastulas are the stage a few days after conception. You cannot extract them from a pregnant woman, because it's before the pregnancy will be known. Also, you won't know that you have a blastula that would develop into a person who will have Parkinson's in 50 years time.

14. China is going to be a major contributor in stem cell research
Many of the brightest biologists are Chinese citizens who are educated in American universities. Several of my colleagues are from China, and they're amazed at the US government's attitude towards research.

The US currently has the most resources and brainpower, but unless our society changes its attitude towards science funding and education, American research institutes could easily be surpassed by Asian and European institutes.
