A Republican in the Democratic-dominated Illinois Senate wants to fire university professor William Ayers, whose history as a 1960s radical became a national campaign issue because of his association with President Barack Obama.

Ayers, a member of the Weather Underground group blamed for setting off bombs in government buildings to protest the Vietnam War, became a flashpoint in the presidential campaign. Before he was a state senator, Obama worked on school reform issues with Ayers, a professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

State Sen. Larry Bomke, a Springfield-area Republican, wants Ayers removed from his university post under a proposal that says anyone who has committed an act of violence against the governments of the United States or Illinois cannot work at a public university.

Ayers could not be reached for comment. But his wife and former Weather Underground member, Bernardine Dohrn, called the bill "obviously, patently insane."

7. It is pretty clear that Republicans want to continue to short change

the American people even after they lose power. The Democrats need to respond to this stupid bullshit and call it what it is, and STICK UP for this man. Also, they to remind the general public that the Annenberg Foundation,those Republicans that wanted and selected Ayer's is going to be thrown under the bus again? So if Ayers was sooo horrible, I guess the Annenbergs are too. I am sick to death of this kind of crap. I am emailing my elected reps, this is an example of what Republicans focus on when American jobs are vaporizing before their eyes.

The charges against this guy were dropped years ago because of prosecutorial misconduct. If he had gone to jail--as he tried to do by surrendering--he would have been out many years ago. And he has spent a lifetime in service, including raising the kids of Weathermen killed when the townhouse in Greenwich Village blew up.. (Many would argue that the toilet bombing in protest of Vietnam was also service, but passing that...)

Ayers has more than redeemed himself, if indeed he needed redemption for a non-violent act of conscience. I was under the impression that the right believed in redemption?

23. You're expecting a right-wing Republican to be constitutionally literate.

Very few of them are, though sadly it too often seems far too few Dem Congresscritters etc. are as well. We need to pass a law that starting in 4th grade the Constitution is read aloud in its entirety at the beginning of the school year and at least a week is spent dissecting it section by section before any other lessons are taught.

I think it would be a splendid idea. Of course, it would open students' eyes to just how full of malevolently-noxious bovine excreta most authority figures are, and the thing that terrifies self-important authority figures more than anything is people who can think. Which is probably why my idea will never be realized, but one can dream... ;)
