NYT President Obama scolded critics of his economic plan on Friday, calling it “inexcusable and irresponsible” to delay the passage of the stimulus legislation in the Senate as he named a new White House economic board to help him respond to the recession.
The White House has tried various levels of volume — to varying degrees of success — in the efforts to push the economic recovery plan through Congress. The president’s words were intentionally sharp as he appeared in the East Room and offered his response to the latest report that revealed nation’s worst monthly jobs report in 35 years.
“I am sure that at the other end of Pennsylvania Avenue, members of the Senate are reading these same numbers this morning,” Mr. Obama said. “I hope they share my sense of urgency and draw the same, unmistakable conclusion: the situation could not be more serious. These numbers demand action.”
He added, “It is inexcusable and irresponsible to get bogged down in distraction and delay while millions of Americans are being put out of work. It is time for Congress to act.” The president made the announcement at a noon speech, 45 minutes after it was scheduled to begin. Aides said he was delayed because of negotiations and consultations with Congressional leaders. When he ultimately arrived in the East Room, he said the economic package was the right size and scope, a sentiment that is not universally shared on Capitol Hill.
