Dallas-based 7-Eleven eliminating 200 jobs

Dallas-based 7-Eleven Inc. confirmed Friday it’s cutting 200 positions and will suspend 401(k) contributions to minimize further job losses.

Job cuts are not from stores, the company said. The 200 jobs being eliminated are in Dallas corporate and other nonstore operations throughout the U.S. and Canada and represent 10 percent of the company’s nonstore work force.

7-Eleven management told employees Thursday that it is also suspending merit pay increases and reducing incentive compensation for most positions.

People losing their jobs will receive support and assistance such as severance and outplacement services, 7-Eleven said.

1. If nothing else, this shows how tightly run 7-Eleven is

According to 7-eleven's website, there are 7600 stores in North America, 5700 of which are in the United States. For this many stores, they have a 2000 (well, 1800 now)-person support staff. That's pretty damn incredible. I think Home Depot has more people than that supporting the hammer department.

2. But it doesn't say how many of those locations are franchises, does it?

MANY, MANY are not owned by 7-11 but rather are merely supplying these locations with 7-11 preferred stock.

5. It's still pretty impressive

Companies smaller than that, with fewer locations, have much larger headcounts per SKU.

I think the "headcount per SKU" is more important than total headcount--Lowe's, which probably has 75,000 SKUs in its national database, needs more people than 7-Eleven which probably has 2000.

3. I thought 7/11 was Japanese owned. It's US operations are in Texas,

but it is ultimately run from Japan.
