Warner Brothers to outsource jobs to India
Source: Economic Times India

9 Feb 2009, 0030 hrs IST, PTI

NEW DELHI: In a move that could ruffle a few feathers in the Barack Obama administration, American entertainment giant Warner Bros has said it will be outsourcing jobs to India.

It is believed that about 200 positions are to be outsourced to India and Poland by Warner Bros, which will slash as many as ten per cent of its 8,000-strong workforce in the coming days. "While no final decision have been made internationally, the company expects the layoffs, elimination of open positions and outsourcing to affect nearly 800 positions worldwide, or approximately ten per cent of its 8,000 employees," a Warner Bros official said.

About 200 open positions and 300 outsourced jobs would be affected as part of the reduction, while another 300 employees would be laid-off, the official said, adding that jobs would be outsourced to India.

While the spokesperson declined to comment on exact number of jobs being moved to India, the sources said that about 300 positions are being outsourced, out of which about 200 would go to India and Poland.

Open positions are referred to those which are currently vacant and for which, the company was hiring.

Why do all these companies "decline to comment on the exact number of jobs being moved to India?"

2. That was my question too.
If we stop making movies, we have no exportable goods anymore.

3. "Bollywood". Even more scary, judging by a trend:
"Bollywood Reality Shows".

They won't have "Survivor: Job Market" where people eat mollusks and kill each other to work.

And, yeah, this offshoring has got to stop. This pattern will ultimately result in their own companies they claim they are saving to fail too.

Besides, this is proof India's economy isn't as bad as others have suggested. (Okay, it's conjecture.)

5. It is a fool's errand ...
These companies need American buyers to survive, and yet these are the very moves that are removing American buyers from the marketplace ....

Warner saves a few million dollars in wages, but then loses many times more as the loss of income ripples through the economy here .... It is a degenerate system that is already running out of gas ....

As a side note: Do venerated names like Hypnotoad become available when discarded by DUers ? ... There are a few others like yours I am surprised were being changed ...

7. Ask the admins, but I believe that they do.
Mind you, for all the lovely people who have me on their 'ignore' lists, they might be in for a shock...

Was I wrong in changing it? Possibly. I have few regrets, and I am honored by your use of "venerated"... :) But a name is still a name. Like Shakespeare wrote while drunk one day, "A rose by any other name is just as sharp because of all those damn thorns that pierced my gums as I danced for Ms Carla at the pub."

13. Hey guys - I work there
It's the finance and account payable depts that are moving jobs from Burbank, although some are staying in Burbank but outsourcing to other companies.

Other studios have already done this from what I've heard - Universal is one.

WB employs thousands of people in SoCal...please don't think badly of us. This came from Time Warner Corporate HQ.

14. Do they still have the VIP Experience Tour @Warner Bros?
Edited on Sun Feb-08-09 10:56 PM by Hawaii Hiker
I think that WB's is better than Universal's VIP tour, because the Universal one contains several rides, (I don't like rides anymore, lol), nearly got sick on the "Back to the Future" ride....

17. The VIP tour I did (think it was $125 or so) lasted about a half day
w/one hour for lunch...That was about 4 years ago, I would like to do that again...There's a lesser expensive tour, but if you love movies, the VIP tour is the way to go...

19. Accounting is what I do.... so that is where accounting services in big corps are going?
So, foreigners learn our currency and do the books over there?
hmmmm.... under who's control? Public companies being audited
here are outsourcing their accounting? There are internal
control audit requirements if the company is public. I guess
they hire an international firm like Deloitte & Touche.

20. It is time to outsource our viewing.
It is us who can put a stop to this. It is our unwillingness to put ourselves out which will continue to encourage this.

We can stop it we just need to try.

31. Reporting has already been outsourced to India
Local reporting is outsourced to India
http://articles.latimes.com/2007/may/11/business/fi-pasadena11

When is local journalism not really local? When it’s about Pasadena and written by someone in India.

James Macpherson, editor and publisher of the Pasadena Now website, hired two reporters last weekend to cover the Pasadena City Council. One lives in Mumbai and will be paid $12,000 a year. The other will work in Bangalore for $7,200.

The council broadcasts its meetings on the Web. From nearly 9,000 miles away, the outsourced journalists plan to watch, then write their stories while their boss sleeps – India is 12.5 hours ahead of Pacific Standard Time.

“A lot of the routine stuff we do can be done by really talented people in another time zone at much lower wages,” said Macpherson, 51, who used to run a clothing business with manufacturing help from Vietnam and India.

30. it is such a circle of bad choices
When companies put jobs overseas to save money and lay off people here, it looks good on the books for a little while. except now the Americans can not afford what the company is buying, so the company has to move a few more jobs overseas. except now the Americans can not afford what the company is buying, so the company has to move a few more jobs overseas. except now the Americans can not afford what the company is buying, so the company has to move a few more jobs overseas. except now the Americans can not afford what the company is buying, so the company has to move a few more jobs overseas.

This is not good for their companies in the long run.

32. Which is why Henry Ford upped the wages of his assembly line workers.
So his workers could become the market he sold to. But the shareholders filed a law suit and won.

Ford said: "My ambition is to employ still more men, to spread the benefits of this industrial system to the greatest possible number, to help them build up their lives and their homes. To do this we are putting the greatest share of our profits back in the business."

And the Michigan Supreme Court ruled in 1919: "A business corporation is organized primarily for the profit of the stockholders, as opposed to the community or its employees. The discretion of the directors is to be exercised in the choice of means to attain that end, and does not extend to the reduction of profits or the non-distribution of profits among stockholders in order to benefit the public..."

So profits over the public good is the law. How very, very, short sighted.

34. Some of the problem is
That many of these companies are being purchased by people in other countries. they are not thinking about the health of this country, they are thinking about profit. It is the consumers that drive the economy, and the most consumers come from USA. although that will probably change soon and the companies will then pull out completely.
