WLOSBEIJING (AP) -- China's leader is asking Britain's Cambridge University to pardon a student who threw a shoe at him during a speech last week.
The incident prompted an outraged response from the Chinese government and stirred indignation among many ordinary Chinese, who see it as an affront to national pride. Now, China's ambassador in London quotes Premier Wen Jiabao saying he hopes "this student will see his mistake."
The student has been arrested for his actions, which mirror a December incident in Iraq that saw a reporter throw his shoes at former President George W. Bush.
Such acts of protest are virtually unknown in China, and at first the media there ignored the story. But Chinese state television later ran a full report on the matter.
