FBI Raids Salmonella Peanut Plant, Offices
Source: CBS News/AP

Federal agents on Monday raided a Georgia peanut processing plant linked to the nationwide salmonella outbreak that has prompted one of the largest product recalls in U.S. history.

The FBI executed search warrants at both the plant in Blakely, Ga., and at Peanut Corp. of America's headquarters in Lynchburg, Va., according to a senior congressional aide with knowledge of the raids. The official spoke only on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly on the matter.

The plant has been identified as the source of the salmonella that has sickened hundreds and killed as many as eight people.

An Atlanta television station captured FBI agents entering the plant and leaving with boxes and other material.

-----

The Justice Department has opened a criminal investigation and more than 1,550 products have been recalled.

1. Boy, talk about Johnny-On-The-Spot!
The executives have had like, what, no time at all to destroy or alter documents and electronic records - barely a month or two.

That'll show 'em!

4. If The Feds Find Any Copies of the Company Song, The PCA Execs are Doomed
Found a peanut, found a peanut,
Found a peanut just now,
Just now I found a peanut,
Found a peanut just now.

Cracked it open, cracked it open,
Cracked it open just now,
Just now I cracked it open,
Cracked it open just now.

It was rotten, it was rotten,
It was rotten just now,
Just now it was rotten,
It was rotten just now.

Sold it anyway, sold it anyway,
Sold it anyway just now,
Just now I sold it anyway,
Sold it anyway just now.

8. Something about this whole affair with the peanuts just doesn't pass my smell test at all...
:tinfoilhat:

Ever notice that when there is "contamination" with a plant product, it's this long affair where little by little they "discover" all these new products that have to be recalled, yada yada? Meanwhile, if it's beef or chicken, they announce the lot numbers and are done with it.

I maintain that 99% of all supposed, real contamination of plant products originated with factory farm icky yuckies getting mixed in somehow. For instance, when this happened with apples that came in contact with fecal matter somehow, they really started to crack down on raw cider. You can still buy it now and then, but it has to carry a warning label!
