Group says it has ethical guidelines on number of embryos implanted

LOS ANGELES - The American Society for Reproductive Medicine says it's investigating whether fertility treatment guidelines were broken in the case of a Southern California woman who gave birth to octuplets last month.

The society said in a statement Monday that it asked Nadya Suleman and the doctor for more details about her latest pregnancy. Suleman's six other children were conceived through in vitro procedures.

The voluntary, nonprofit organization has guidelines for the number of embryos that should be implanted to prevent multiple births. But the group can't stop doctors from practicing.

1. Maybe the invtro doctor had an agreement for a % of profits from the reality show.

What's the cost to the taxpayers so far for the care of the babies?
Maybe the doc would like to help pay for some of that.
Clearly Mz Suleman is not financially able to do so.
Nor mentally.

9. CA Medical Bd investigating to see if any violations of std of care by the doctor.

But the jurisdiction of the board is limited. If no law violated and std of care OK, they have no legal basis for action against the doctor.

5. The Dr. should lose his license for putting the health and welfare of all at risk.

She could easily have had severe complications and the various risks to each of the eight embryos are too numerous to list outside of a medical book.

There is no justification for what he did and he shouldn't be allowed to do anything similar ever again.

6. This is a bigger problem than just this woman...

Whether it's the Dugars with 18 kids or the many multiple births we are seeing....many children and multiple births are being glamorized and normalized.

I don't know what the answer is because if you start imposing rules on who can and who can't have invitro....than ethical lines begin to get crossed.

time to have 14 kids. Not even accidentally, but implanted, on purpose, and not have any money. I am in awe.
