Climate change nudges American birds northward
Source: Reuters

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Climate change is pushing American birds northward, with some finches and chickadees moving hundreds of miles (km) into Canada, an Audubon Society study reported on Tuesday.

Drawing on citizen observations over a 40-year period, the society's scientists found that 58 percent of 305 widespread bird species found in the contiguous United States shifted significantly to the north.

While there are many factors that can make birds move, there's no question this is caused by human-spurred global warming, according to report co-author Greg Butcher.

"This isn't something that's going to happen in the Arctic or the Antarctic and it isn't something that's going to happen way off in the future," he said. "It's something that has been occurring over 40 years and it is disrupting the lives of birds and it's going to disrupt the lives of people as well."

1. The migratory song birds in our area haven't been seen in a couple of years.
I'm on a mountain near San Diego; used to see orioles, cedar waxwings, robins, and lots of other birds here that we just don't see anymore.

instead, we get parrots that have migrated up from Mexico, which would seem to support this theory.

5. The parrots aren't migratory
They're escaped exotics.

There are no currently recognized parrots in California.

But missing robins, waxwings, and so forth? That would be climate change.

2. All life is moving northward . . .

And, yes, our negative impact on the planet has long been observable ---
going back to the beginning of the industrial revolution and before.

Models of Global Warming and the effects of burning fossil fuels date to at least 1957.
Global Warming also has a 50 year delay - so that what we are feeling right now only
reflects the impact we've had on the planet up to 1958. The tremendous populations
added after that time, gas-guzzlers, pesticides, pollutants of every kind were largely
added after that period.

The distortion of information about Global Warming has been brought to us by MONEY
-- mainly from the oil industry. The NY Times for decades printed ExxonMobil's lies and
disclaimers on the Op-Ed pages of their newspaper in "ad-editorials" which were never
less than $20,000 per issue.

As we can recognize now, much of our corporate-media has played deaf, dumb and blind on
this issue. A few years ago, however, the Weather Channel acknowledged that here in NJ
we are "averaging 25 degrees above normal." Some light was coming thru the cracks.
The Royal Academy of Science wrote a harsh article citing ExxonMobil as the leading
propagandist in keeping information about Global Warming from the public and noting they
had lied, misinformed and distorted information about Global Warming over decades at huge
financial expense to them.

We don't have much time to regain control of our government and our elected officials ---
we have to stop burning fossil fuels. And, consider that we have come to PEAK OIL, at any rate.
It also means PEAK GAS.

This pretty much means that we are not going to have the usual means of energy to run
factories. If we do have a future still on this planet, it will be one of great change.
As some have predicted "The End of Suburbia."

Nature is taking us backwards . . . even if it is going to tolerate us any longer on this
planet -- and even if the planet itself continues to turn. We can't be sure of that, either!!

3. The birds and the birdbrains...
The birds realize what the birdbrains don't - we have disturbed the natural order. They will adapt. We may not be able to.

6. I moved to the Tidewater Virginia area
in 1982. Every year in the Fall and the Spring we would see large flocks of Canada Geese flying North or South. They would stop for a few days to feed and rest. Now we have large groups of full time resident Canada geese. The numbers seen migrating are way down from years ago.
