Favre tells Jets he's retiring
Source: ESPN

Without the tearful public ceremony that accompanied his retirement announcement from the Green Bay Packers just 11 months ago, quarterback Brett Favre has told the New York Jets he is retiring.

Favre had instructed his agent, James "Bus" Cook, to inform the Jets on Wednesday that he is retiring. Jets team executives and coach Rex Ryan confirmed the retirement in a statement, saying they talked to Favre on Wednesday morning about his decision.

"I have great admiration for him as a player and a person. I wish him only the best in his life after football," Ryan said.

In an e-mail to ESPN's Ed Werder, Favre indicated he had no regrets about finishing his career with the Jets rather than with the Green Bay Packers franchise he represented for his previous 16 NFL seasons. He specifically praised Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum, team owner Woody Johnson and fired coach Eric Mangini -- and even mentioned Thomas Jones and Kerry Rhodes, both of whom were publicly critical of Favre after the team's collapse in the final month of the season prevented the Jets from making the playoffs.

4. Wow - deja vu all over again
Edited on Wed Feb-11-09 12:07 PM by tularetom
He's already outdone Joe Montana, Johnny Unitas and Willie Mays by sticking around too long after he ceased to be effective.

On edit - how did i forget Michael Jordan.

5. Folks up here in Wisconsin have really
turned on him. I would think there are still diehard fans, but he is pretty much not well thought of up around here.

12. used to live in wisconsin and I'll root for Farve wherever he goes
can't believe all that did turn on him. Some fans they were. It's some young whippersnapper at the Packers who's a real asshole from what I've understood. (probably thru Countdown)

13. It kind of surprises me too.
To tell you the truth, I know nothing about football and I actually hate football. I can't stand it when my husband puts it on tv, so I couldn't care less. But the level of animosity is somewhat surprising.

15. Good for him. And did he handle his last retirement poorly ?
Of course he did. So what. He's a football player, Jim,, not a debutant. So he screwed up. It's not a perfect world, screws fall out.

Have been a Pacer fan since the early 60s and Brett is one of my favorites of all time. Too many great moments to let one screw up, that wasn't even that bad of a screw up, tarnish it.

Good for him. There are so few "greats" in sport anymore and he was certainly one of them.

20. He's a great player and an egotistical jerk
I hope he never plays another day in the NFL. I loved watching him play for my beloved Packers for so many years but he's making a fool of himself now. Go away, Brett. Stay retired this time.

21. Well said
Favre aka Chokre is great but overrated. I was actually hoping he comes back so he can tarnish his legacy even more. Farewell...maybe...to the all time interception king.

I am so tired of him that I could scream. In fact, the very mention of his name often makes me do so.
