International Herald-TribuneBANGKOK: A roadside bomb in insurgency-plagued southern Thailand killed three policemen and wounded one other, a military spokesman said Thursday.
The policemen had escorted a group of teachers to school and were returning to their base in a pickup truck when the blast occurred in Pattani, one of three southernmost provinces that has faced an Islamic insurgency since early 2004, said Col. Parinya Chaidilok.

Public school teachers are usually escorted to work and back by security forces. Police say the militants believe the government is trying to indoctrinate students with un-Islamic values at public schools, making teachers prime targets.

More than 3,300 people, mostly civilians, have been killed as a result of the violence. The insurgents target Buddhists and Muslims who they believe have collaborated with the government, including soldiers, police, informants and civilians.
