Iraq MPs Seek Reparation For 1981 Israeli Attack On Nuclear Reactor
Source: Haaretz

Iraqi parliamentarians are demanding Israel pay billions of dollars in reparations for a 1981 Israeli attack on an Iraqi nuclear reactor, Baghdad's daily al-Sabbah reported Thursday.

Mohammed Naji Mohammed, a member of parliament with the United Iraqi Alliance coalition, is leading a campaign for a parliamentary resolution obliging the Iraqi foreign ministry and courts to seek billions of dollars in reparations for an Israeli air strike on the Osiraq nuclear reactor, the newspaper reported.

The organizers reportedly said they will argue their case based on a UN Security Council resolution passed in the wake of the attack.

UN Security Council Resolution 487 "strongly condemns" Israel's air strike against Iraq's Osiraq nuclear reactor in June 1981, and "considers that Iraq is entitled to appropriate redress for the destruction it has suffered, responsibility for which has been acknowledged by Israel."

Israeli officials at the time said they were concerned that the reactor could eventually be used to produce nuclear weapons.

The Security Council, however, noted at the time that the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) had testified that its safeguards had been "satisfactorily applied" in Iraq."

10. There was no war.
It was an act of government sanctioned terrorism.

8. Take it out of the reparations for the missile strikes on Israel in the first gulf war
Everybody wins. Israel sues Iraq for missile strikes against it in 1991, then uses the money to pay back Iraq for the reactor.

Yay.

9. hmmmm
"A U.N. committee dealing with reparation claims against Iraq dating to the 1991 Gulf War approved more than $31 million to be paid to Israeli businesses and individuals. The 1999 decision stemmed from a 1992 Security Council decision calling on Iraq to compensate victims of the Gulf War (JTA, 4/14/99). In 2001, the United Nations Compensation Commission awarded $74 million to Israel for the costs it incurred from Iraqi Scud missile attacks during the Gulf War. The Commission rejected most of the $1 billion that Israel had requested (JTA, 6/21/01)."

pay up.

11. YES! Go get 'em Iraq. Way to make those UN resolutions work FOR you.
On the flip side I'd hate to see how we owe them for destroying the country over WMD's that didn't exist. It'll probably be a couple hundred trillion. I say we seize the Bush & Cheney family fortunes now. Halliburton, KBR, and Black water too. They should have to pay for their negligence. Not us.

12. Yeah. That's gonna happen.
Do I even need to guess who has the documents which could support Iraq's case, specifically the case that the Iraqis were not planning to make WMDs at Osiraq?

(Hint: You'll see what's in his library the day he reads a book.)
