BRASILIA - Brazil on Thursday formally asked Switzerland to share their probe of an alleged racist attack on a pregnant Brazilian woman near Zurich who said she lost the twins she was carrying after the assault.

Foreign Minister Celso Amorim said the charge d’affaires of the Swiss embassy had been summoned to receive the request.

"We can’t draw any conclusions yet, but we have asked the Swiss authorities to conduct their investigation with more transparency so we can have all the information," he told reporters.

The case revolves around 26-year-old Brazilian lawyer, Paula Oliveira, living with her Swiss husband in Dubendorf, a satellite village of Zurich.

She told Swiss police that on Monday three neo-Nazi skinheads grabbed her and cut the initials SVP into her thighs and belly as she was returning home from work.

Doubts over Swiss attack claims

A Brazilian woman who said she miscarried twins
after an alleged racist attack in Zurich was not
pregnant, investigators have said.

Paula Oliveira, a 26-year-old lawyer, had said
she was attacked by three knife-wielding skinheads
on Monday.

However, medical experts said she was not pregnant,
and that it was possible the numerous wounds on
her torso and legs were self-inflicted.

Brazil had expressed concern to Swiss officials
over the incident.

7. I see what you mean by looking at the photo of the victim! She's clearly far too well-balanced

to DREAM of doing something like this. She radiates maturity, great self-esteem, professionalism, respect for others. She looks as if she works with tons of people, is very much at ease around them. She's no nut job.

What her father said was very likely: "The circumstances are not clear because the police are not investigating."

The article also quotes someone who indicates the police don't get all wild about crimes against foreign people as the public doesn't really care that much about them.

Simple to grasp, and I tend to believe it.

Uh, here's an article which looks pretty damned definitive. It includes a photo which was obviously taken befor the attack, and the fact she's got that tummy, and is posing for a photo tells me beyond all doubt she was pregant at the time, and her face tells me she's not a faker:

GENEVA (AP) — Zurich police on Thursday were investigating an alleged skinhead assault on a pregnant Brazilian woman that caused her to miscarry twins and left her scarred with the initials of Switzerland's main right-wing party.

Details of the attack shocked the Swiss public and prompted Brazilian officials to suggest it was prompted by xenophobia.

Zurich police said details were not yet clear but a man called Monday evening to report that a woman at a Zurich train station needed help. When police found her, she had the letters carved into her skin and told them she had suffered a miscarriage after the attack.

Brazil's Foreign Ministry and Brazilian media reported that three skinheads, one with a Nazi symbol tattooed on his forehead, attacked the woman outside a local train station in Zurich while she was heading home. She had been speaking in Portuguese to her mother on a cell phone when she was accosted.

Yes, she is highly educated and according to the family, was thrilled that she was going to have her first babies (twins). Hard to imagine that such a woman would carve initials on her body.

case. (Oh, God. I just recalled that clear looney-toon character who claimed a man carved "Obama" onto her face while molesting her or something, who was exposed IMMEDIATELY after she pulled her stunt. You recall she had a letter written backward, the way it would appear in a mirror!)

Glad you reminded us of that young Brazilian guy who was working in London, who'd been mistakenly chased down and tackled, held down and shot directly in the head by a London policeman. Unbearably rotten. He had NEVER been connected with anything close to terrorism.

I think you're right about compensation, but they surely tried hard to make it look as if it couldn't have been avoided. Yeah, right.
