Octuplets fertility doctor at center of another multi-pregnancy
Source: LA Times

February 12, 2009

The Beverly Hills doctor who helped Nadya Suleman conceive octuplets also provided fertility treatment to a 49-year-old woman who is pregnant with quadruplets and is hospitalized at County-USC Medical Center. Several sources told The Times that Dr. Michael Kamrava transferred at least seven embryos made from younger donor eggs.

(snip)

The woman in the latest case arrived recently at Good Samaritan Hospital for treatment but was transferred last week to County-USC because she lacks insurance, the sources said. Doctors placed her on bed rest until the birth of the babies, which, they added, could be two or three months from now. Reached by telephone, the woman, who is about five months pregnant, denied that Kamrava was her doctor. She said her doctors urged her not to talk to the media because she is already dealing with a high-risk pregnancy and doesn't need more stress.

"Please respect my privacy," she said.

(The Times has confirmed the information through several independent sources, who spoke on the condition that they not be named.) The woman has three grown children from a previous marriage but wanted another child with her second husband, who is in his early 30s and doesn’t have any children. She works as an apartment manager; her husband is a contractor. Kamrava could not be reached for comment and has declined previous interview requests. A woman who answered the phone at his West Coast IVF Clinic said, “If mother wants to bring four kids, so what?”

2. 49 years old?!?!??! Holy crap! Isn't that a little too old for a woman to be having children?
She's inherently at a much greater medical risk being pregnant at that mature of an age, and with multiple children!

31. Transferring 7 in that situation sure doesn't make sense to me
Quads are going to be very hard to carry for any mother.

But I think the age part has more to do with ability to conceive than ability to carry. But 7? Too, too many.

47. Mary, my friend was a bit of an eccentric as far as the typical moms go.
What I admired about her was that she NEVER lied to her child. Emily was never told the prince charming fairy tales that most mothers tell their children. She was told that there was no Santa Claus, that there was no Easter bunny, and that goodness was its own reward, that there wasn't a mythical cloud in a mythical heaven waiting for her when she died.

Emily skipped several grades, got high honors in all her classes, and is one of the most mature and utterly charming teenagers you'll ever meet.

If I had a kid, I would emulate Mary.

38. they used to get Down's Syndrome
when they had a baby late in life, isn't this still true, or do pre-natal vitamins really make this a non-issue? Any way I see it, there should be a law that no more than 3-at-a-time in utero, more than triplets should be illegal, for the health of the children, as people. That has really been lost in all the hoopla, treacher-collins syndrome? Have it anyway! What about as people, what happened to considering the future, how will these children grow up & live in the world? Who will take care of them if they have catastrophic birth defects?

I.e., eggs from a younger woman. So, decreased risk of Downs?

Anyway, I think the guy's license should be yanked. But will the state's med licensing board have the balls to do it?

25. Agree. Or, at least, inquire about their lack of insurnace
realizing that the woman may have to be hospitalized some months before delivery.

Isn't it amazing that people who want to adopt have to jump through so many hoops, yet ones who want to bring multiple children can do so at will.

10. I wonder
if this doctor has some sicko weird baby thing going on where he's a sperm donor for all these fertilized eggs. Some religions believe the more family they have means a place in a "higher" heaven. He finds poor women, uses them as an incubator for the millions he expects to fertilize. Man my tinfoil is strong.

17. If I remember correctly . . .
It is not uncommon to put back multiple embryos. The IVR facility will put back multiples then recommend selective abortion if multiple embryos survive the process. Putting back multiple embryos is not at all uncommon. Most IVR processes involve multiple embryos being put back.

18. Interesting Contrast
It is interesting that Octomom was able to finish her pregnancy at Kaiser Peramenta Hospital while this woman was sent to the local county hospital. I have to wonder if it would have been cheaper for taxpayers if Octomom had been sent to the county hospital. Would Kaiser have been able to turn her away if she had shown up on their doorstep? There seems to be a disparity between the level of medical care Ocotmom was able to receive and what this woman will get.

Edited on Fri Feb-13-09 09:16 AM by Rebellious Republica
He is probably a right wing fundie who thinks its ok to play god one way and not another, fuckin hypocrites. How much you wanna bet he is Anti Abortion, anti pregnancy prevention and does not or would refuse to dispense the pill or condoms. I bet he votes republican and is for slashing social spending and aid for the poor, because he wants his tax's lower or non existent. He is probably pro adoption as opposed to abortion, but would not adopt himself, someone else should do that. OK end of rant, I feel much better now!

This Doctor needs to be investigated in a serious way!

This really smells of Josef Mengele type mentality.....

Snip> Mengele was tasked by Hitler to create a “Master Race”, did this work actually continue after the Fall of Germany? <Snip

Thats two women that he has crossed both ethical and moral bounds by his flagrant use of in vitro fertilization.

I am not saying that it should never be used, it should however be used wisely! Most Doctors would never cross the the line of two per mom, thats SOP.

This doctor has gone to far, and guess who is going to pick up the tab for these mothers and this idiot that calls himself a doctor, want to take a guess?
