Shock as Tanzania teachers caned
Source: bbc

The teachers union in Tanzania is considering legal action after 19 school teachers were given the cane.

The primary teachers were caned by a police officer after an inquiry into poor exam results at three schools.

The report blamed teachers for being late or not showing up for work and not teaching the official syllabus.

The deputy education minister has condemned the caning but asked the teachers not to take action until the case has been investigated.

3. The legacy of British Colonialism
Having taught in East Aftrica I'm not surprised. I made a very big protest of the public caning and humiliation of students at the school where I taught. The teachers told me that it was essential that there be caning to make students learn. I walked off the job for a day in protest and then decided that writing letters was a better option. --

I saw it as an incongruent hold-over from British Colonialism and I'm pretty sure that's what's at work in this Tanzania teacher caning incident. The attitude is very disrespectful of the individual.

Tanzanian teacher whipping move

A regional official in Tanzania has been sacked for ordering police to whip primary school teachers as a punishment for arriving at school late.

In a statement, the government said the official had broken public-service rules and humiliated the teachers.

Nineteen teachers were caned in front of their pupils after an inquiry into poor exam results at three schools.

The inquiry blamed teachers for being late or not showing up for work and not teaching the official syllabus.
