Chalabi stands by faulty intelligence
Telegraph UK

Chalabi stands by faulty intelligence that toppled Saddam's regime

An Iraqi leader accused of feeding faulty pre-war intelligence to Washington said yesterday his information about Saddam Hussein's weapons, even if discredited, had achieved the aim of persuading America to topple the dictator.

Ahmad Chalabi and his London-based exile group, the Iraqi National Congress, for years provided a conduit for Iraqi defectors who were debriefed by US intelligence agents. But many American officials now blame Mr Chalabi for providing intelligence that turned out to be false or wild exaggerations about Iraq's weapons of mass destruction.

Mr Chalabi, by far the most effective anti-Saddam lobbyist in Washington, shrugged off charges that he had deliberately misled US intelligence. "We are heroes in error," he told the Telegraph in Baghdad.

"As far as we're concerned we've been entirely successful. That tyrant Saddam is gone and the Americans are in Baghdad. What was said before is not important. The Bush administration is looking for a scapegoat. We're ready to fall on our swords if he wants."

Wow, talk about your ends justifying your means!

1. "We are heroes in error"
WTF?!?!?!?!?! First off, aside from that statement making NO sense, Chalabi didn't put his life on the line for shit. That fat bastard just showed up after the fighting was done to declare himself emperor.

6. They'll get a chance - this is a rightwing newspaper.
Plus, it's pro-Imperial, so it'll get play.

The most important line in the whole piece is this: The Bush administration is looking for a scapegoat.

Wonder if BushCo will be happy with Chalabi for that comment?

7. Wouldn't call it honesty....
This guy's a swindler from way back...

<clips>

...In 1992, Mr Chalabi was tried in his absence and sentenced by a Jordanian court to 22 years' jail on 31 charges of embezzlement, theft, misuse of depositor funds and currency speculation.

...One London banking source said: "He boasted that there was nothing to worry about. He said he had just transferred $20,000 for the wife of a top member of the regime so she could buy underwear."

Members of Mr Chalabi's family also ran a gold dealing company, SCF, in London; an investment company, Socofi, in Geneva; and another bank, Mebco, in Geneva and Beirut, as well as a Washington arm, Petra International. The documents record that Mr Chalabi's interests also included companies in Jordan - Al Rimal and Abhara.

By the time of its crash, Petra was the third-largest bank in Jordan, and the poverty stricken Jordanian government was forced to pay out $200m to depositors who would otherwise have lost their savings, and to avert a possible collapse of the country's entire banking system.

Mr Chalabi left the country and subsequently re-emerged living in style in a London apartment off Park Lane.

9. So, will Perle apologize to the CIA and sit in line with Chalabi
for the 'heads will roll' segment of 'OPS goes the weasle'?

Cheney, the neocon chicken hawks, PNAC, Sharon, Chalabi, US corporations engaged in war profiteering, all throwing away lives of US military, Iraqi civilians and the honor of this country ... all for personal gain.

How nice of Chalabi and his band of thugs to take the fall now that they have the filled their pockets with Iraq's treasures.

Note to the malAdministration: It still won't save your asses.

For bush*/cheney and bad company: NO MORE YEARS

11. What Chalabi doesn't mention...
is the $400 million dollars in contracts he's already received since the U.S. toppled Saddam.

Not bad. He tells the * administration what it wants to hear so they'll invade, he's paid handsomely, and he's left in prime position to rule the country. Not bad for a convicted swindler.
