Plane crash lands at London City Airport
A passenger plane has crash-landed on the runway at London City Airport.

Last Updated: 9:18PM GMT 13 Feb 2009

The nose wheel of the British Airways jet broke on landing after travelling from Amsterdam as the undercarriage failed.

The 67 passengers and five crew on board the flight were evacuated safely but two people have been taken to hospital.

Six ambulances were sent as a precaution as well as a number of fire engines and police cars.

Eye witness Alistair Grant told Sky News: "I'm just opposite City Airport and there are about 20 fire engines and ambulances on the runway. Police have blocked everything and are diverting traffic.

"The whole of the front undercarriage has failed but apart from that it's not in bad shape.

17. only airport in London I will use
London Theifrow and Gatwick are disasters, I will fly to Amsterdam or Frankfurt and then backtrack to London City just to avoid the insanity.

15. There are quite a few commercial flights between LCY and Europe.
They are very expensive because of the phenomenal convenience relative to LHR (Heathrow) and LGW (Gatwick). When I did my article on London City airport in the mid-1990s, I traveled on Cross Air to and from Switzerland quite a bit on BAe-146 jets. It was not unusual for me to get off the airplane, clear the non-EU passport control, clear non-EU customs, and be in a cab in 5 minutes. It can be that convenient! Try that at Heathrow's new Terminal 5.

18. no kidding
LCY is incredible, try the old Toronto airport sometime, didn't clear customs as I was flying between Ottawa and Toronto but from gate to taxi to Toronto office, including the worlds shortest ferry ride was less than 10 minutes.

22. Toronto Island Airport......
Pearson or the old Malton airport is miles out of the city, the Island airport is downtown on the waterfront....

20. I flew out of all of the three "poor folk" airports regularly when I was living over that way.
But my bosses never sprung for a fancy "boutique" airport!

12. LCY is a small airport on the banks of the Thames
between the city and Canary Wharf.

LHR and LGW are much bigger airports.

5. Update from Reuters: BA plane crash lands in London, two injured
http://www.alertnet.org/thenews/newsdesk/LD24972.htm

LONDON, Feb 13 (Reuters) - A British Airways <BAY.L> passenger plane crash-landed at London's City airport on Friday, injuring two of the 72 passengers and crew, a Fire Brigade spokeswoman said.

The front under-carriage of the four-engined plane failed on landing at the airport in east London, the spokeswoman said.

Sixty-seven passengers and five crew got out of the plane before emergency services arrived, she said.

Two people were injured, she said, but she did not know how seriously.

There was no fire and the Fire Brigade did not have to intervene, she said.

Sky News reported the plane had arrived from Amsterdam.

Spokesmen for British Airways and City airport could not immediately be reached for comment.

An eyewitness told Sky News the plane was on the runway surrounded by fire engines, ambulances and police cars.

"It looks like the policemen and fire crew have worked very diligently and managed to bring everything under control," he said. (Reporting by Adrian Croft, Dominic Evans; Editing by Matthew Jones)

9. I have landed a BA-146 at LCY (London City Airport) at Canary Warf
Edited on Fri Feb-13-09 04:23 PM by DemoTex
VERY short runway .. very steep approach. So steep that the GPWS has to be disabled for the approach. Most jet landings at LCY are "hard."

11. Used to fly to Paris, etc. from there
Particularly, pre-Chunnel. Desolate place to arrive on a late flight, all buttoned up.

Could get a lot of fog, too.

23. This wasn't really a "crash."
It was a landing on a failed landing gear.
