Report: U.S. officers probed on Iraq rebuilding
Unclear what evidence exists against retired colonel, lieutenant colonel
Sat., Feb. 14, 2009 - MSNBC/REUTERS

NEW YORK - U.S. officials looking into irregularities in the early portion of the $125 billion U.S.-led effort to rebuild Iraq have expanded the inquiry to include senior U.S. military officers who oversaw the program, The New York Times reported on its Web site.

Citing senior government officials with whom it conducted interviews, as well as court documents, the Times reported that investigators had subpoenaed the personal bank records of an Army colonel, now retired, in charge of reconstruction contracting in Iraq in 2003 and 2004, when the operation expanded greatly in scope to repair Iraq's infrastructure.

Investigators were also examining the activities of an Air Force lieutenant colonel who was a senior contracting officer in Baghdad in 2004, the Times said, citing two federal officials involved in the inquiry.

Both men, who worked in a civilian contracting office, said they had nothing to hide from investigators, and the newspaper said it was still unclear what evidence there might be against them. But officials told the Times several criminal cases in recent years pointed to widespread corruption within the operation run by the men.

2. Article doesn't mention it
but I'm wondering if the trail of breadcrumbs will eventually lead to a Halliburton, KBR, or Xe (formerly known as Blackwater)

everytime there's some crap exposed one or more of these entities seem to be involved. As they use to say "all roads lead to Rome" - maybe it's time to update that saying to "all crap leads to Halliburton/KBR/Xe (formerly known as Blackwater)

3. I hope the investigation is complete and very, very
thorough. They need to find out what happened to all the money that simply "went missing" and let the chips fall where they may.

To her credit, Susan Collins saved it from the Bush cover-up chopping block, just before the 2006 mid-terms. http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=364x3124886
