Franken: Call me 'Senator-elect'
By ANDY BARR | 2/16/09 3:17 PM EST Updated: 2/16/09 5:14 PM EST

Democrat Al Franken has started using the title “senator-elect,” despite the fact that his contest with Sen. Norm Coleman (R-Minn.) has not yet been decided.

A Minnesota court is currently hearing Coleman’s challenge to the recount.

A press release sent out by his staff Monday announcing a series of town halls with local mayors reads: “Sen.-elect Franken held the first in a series of roundtable discussions with Minnesota Mayors today in St. Paul. Franken and metro-area mayors discussed the economic realities facing their cities, budget cuts, President Obama's measures for economic stimulus, and how to grow Minnesota’s economy.”

The Democratic mayor of St. Paul is also quoted in the release referring to Franken as the victor.

“Right now, Washington is debating matters of enormous consequence to Minnesota’s economy,” Mayor Chris Coleman says in the release. “Senator-elect Franken understands what our cities need to prosper, and we’re ready for him to go to Washington to be a voice for us.”

As with most voters, judges might be swayed by premature emotional responses.
Whatever else, it's nice to see one of the two candidates give a damn about this country. Al Franken is proving that in action.

1. Another dishonest article (and title) from the right-wing rag known as Politico.

They are no better than Drudge.

Franken never said such a thing. Their title is making it sound like Al Franken wants everybody to refer to him as senator-elect. He never said such a thing. In his press releases, his staff is refering to him as senator elect, because the Minnesota Canvassing Board certified him as such.

7. Why isn't Al seated?
The Senate provisionally seated Mary Landrieu without a peep.

Why is Al getting shafted out of his seat?

9. We need preemptive DVR alerts.
When breaking news hits, you already have a DVR instructed to capture certain topics. Coleman's concession could be ready to be recorded. It could almost be a pay-per-record charge in the cases of things like Karl Rove in Prison. I'd pay to be sure I recorded that.

10. How can the pukes presume to filibuster the seating of Franken....
Edited on Mon Feb-16-09 11:12 PM by Historic NY
when he was duly elected by the people of his home state.

The GOP has promised to mount a filibuster — which would require 60 votes to overcome — if Democrats attempt to seat Franken before Coleman exhausts his legal remedies.

12. Does that even make sense?
The senate doesn't have to confirm its own members, does it? Every seated member of the senate has to be voted on? Not that I've ever heard. Doesn;t make sense and would be a logistical nightmare, especially with obstructionist republicans hanging around.

13. A Dem has learned something valuable from the Puke playbook
Namely, act as if you have already won. Then, it's more likely that you WILL ultimately prevail.

Way to go, Senator-Elect Franken!! I applaud you!!

14. How long will this go on?
I can understand giving Coleman (or any candidate) time to challenge the results in a close election and/or if they feel votes were unfairly discarded, but when does it end? Every time his request is denied by the court, he simply files another challenge. It's getting ridiculous! As long as the GOP keeps funding him, he could do this for six years if he wanted to.

The law certainly can't allow an indefinite period of challenge, so at what point does this finally end?
