Bishops’ statement angers some on illegal immigration

Two Fremont residents who have been at the head of an ongoing illegal immigration debate said a recent joint statement from the three Catholic bishops in Nebraska crosses the line.

The statement released earlier this week discouraged the Nebraska Unicameral and the governments of local communities, like Fremont, from passing their own immigration laws.

Former Fremont City Council member Bob Warner and Carl Schaffner, a potential candidate for mayor in 2008, said government activities are not the business of the church.

“I think they’re wrong,” Warner said of the rare joint statement from Archbishop Eldon F. Curtiss of Omaha, Bishop Fabian W. Bruskewitz of Lincoln and Bishop William J. Dendinger of Grand Island.

So go ahead and pass anti illegal immigration laws. It will help kill off the Republican party.
