Japanese woman pregnant with wrong egg after IVF mix-up
Source: The Telegraph

A Japanese woman became pregnant with another person's baby following an egg mix-up during fertility treatment.

The mistake happened when the woman, who is in her twenties, underwent IVF treatment at a government-run hospital in Kagawa Prefecture.

But medical tests during the early stages of pregnancy revealed the implanted egg was unlikely to have come from the mother.

Further investigations led to the discovery that the fertilised eggs of another patient had accidentally been implanted.

The article goes on to say that the woman had an abortion and is now seeking compensation from the government.

4. Anybody ask the donor mom how she feels?
Or is it only the container whose feelings we care about?

7. Classic misogyny, calling this woman a 'container'.
I find your language disgusting. Maybe you can try again, with a little more respect.

11. Well, there are four parties involved here
There's the woman who got the wrong embryo implanted, she might have a partner/husband who is also quite disappointed, there's the woman whose egg made this embryo, and there's a man who donated sperm to make it. All four of them have some sort of 'interest' in this, yet your sympathy seemed to be for the first one on that list.

I have sympathy for all of them. Even for the embryo who was considered nothing more than a 'mistake' that someone deliberately created.

20. You miss my point, which was that YOU ARE WRONG to call a pregnant woman a 'container'.
Edited on Fri Feb-20-09 10:24 PM by crikkett
Alright, I'll say that I may have helped you jump to a conclusion about who I sympathize with in this case, although I did not reveal my complete opinion.

However, I WILL say that I have no sympathy for you, because it remains WRONG to call a woman a 'container'. Period.

Bad, bad customerserviceguy!

8. Do you bring that customer service attitude to work?
"Container?"

Fine, let's snatch that nonviable cluster of cells and implant it in YOU. You carry it. You grow it. How's that, eh? And before you leap to say, "Sure, **I*** would do it," because you think it will never happen--think twice. The artificial womb is ENTIRELY possible. We may have to do a little chopping to fit it in your "container" but that shouldn't be too hard for a clever doc.

And we might have to shoot you full of hormones, but what the hell--you seem to be such a willing, and certainly judgmental, "container."

12. See my response above.
There are three or four adults involved here, maybe the other ones have some feelings about this as well.

16. The only "operative" adult is the doctor who threw the cluster of cells away by stashing them in the
wrong womb. And as a result of his fuckup, he should be sued, mightily.

Beyond that, it isn't the "duty" of the woman you call the "container" to endure a profound insult to her body and mind just so other people don't feel bad.

There's only ONE adult "involved" here--and that's the woman who has the right to do whatever the hell she wants with her womb.

As for the two adults who made that embryo, their beef is with the doctor who threw it away. Not with the woman who doesn't care to host it.

It's her decision, her business. It's not your business. Nor is it anyone else's.

10. ok
how about YOU try being forced to become a surrogate mother against your will, and give the child up at birth (which is what was likely in the country this took place in) when you are are desperate to have a child of your own

5. How about adoption, have people ever though of that option?!?!
Instead of injecting eggs that could be from some other person or ever fertilized by the fertility doctor? As if the world population isn't high enough.

6. In Japan, adoption is not very common.
And their population is actually decreasing, not increasing.

There are some unique cultural factors going on in this particular story.

18. I think this every time I hear about what people go through with IVF.
There are plenty of kids in need of parents.

13. Frankly, this is nobody's business except those involved, is it?
In a country where people are having, or being allowed, only one child, I'd think it would make a huge difference if it were me.

Japan currently has a declining population and citizens are encouraged to have children.

They really are two different nations with two very different cultures.

19. This isn't happening in China. In Japan, you can have as many kids as you want.
Unfortunately for the government, which wants more youngsters, there aren't many people who want to have a lot of kids. The population is declining.

anyone else commenting is superfluous.
