Fishermen rescue trapped dolphins
Source: iol news

Toronto - A group of fishermen and a teenage boy from a small eastern Canadian village were being hailed as heroes for rescuing three exhausted dolphins that had been trapped behind drifting pack ice for nearly a week, the wife of the town's mayor said on Friday.

"He could barely swim about, the little guy, and the men knew something had to be done. A kid, 17 years old with a survival suit, jumped into the water and the dolphin just kind of attached to him and wrapped his flippers around him, like a friend or a mate," the mayor's wife told The Associated Press.

The teenager, Brandon Banks, helped tow the animal to open water, where it swam away, said May.

"In the end, it wasn't experts or the government, it was us, the people, who made the decision to rescue them. We didn't know, at the time, if we were doing the right thing but we knew something had to be done," said May. "In Newfoundland, you don't think about yourselves, you think about others and this time, we were just thinking that we couldn't let these dolphins die."

1. Thank you for posting this.
It's nice to read a "feel-good" story once in a while.

6. Yes.Thanks for posting a 'mild" photo of that procedure.

And people have tried for years to stop this. I can understand PETAs desperate measures when I see pups being clubbed over the head, or the dolphins in Japan in the annual "let's see if we can turn the harbour red again" ritual.

One of the things in life that begin to stir up feelings of violence in me.

15. There's 500,000 people in Newfoundland. And they are wonderful people.
Please don't generalize all Newfoundlanders for the actions of a few.

It would be akin to me posting a picture of a dead Iraqi child and saying "Americans sure are a bunch of sadistic killers."

9. With global warming upon us hopefully those ice flows will break
away more often carrying the clubbers to an icy death. If they won't quit on their own, hopefully nature will take that slime away.

8. I am so pleased with this news.
I woke up wondering how they where. Thank you to the people
who rescued them. Dolphins have saved humans this is paying it back.
Thank you for the update. I hope these good people hear our thanks.
One love.

10. Dolphins have also attacked people :)
This is a great story, but people should be careful about thinking these mammals are like Flipper and Shamu. I had a friend years ago who tried to feed a wild porpoise and was bitten fairly severely on the hand. Required quite a few stitches.

11. Shhhh!
Don't harsh our mellow. Dolphins are great. They never bite.

Psst!

Of course, there are cases like that, where they bite, but still...it's a happy story. Don't harsh the mellow. ;)

12. Saved countless humans . Good on the occasional circus biter.
For the record, they have much better impulse control than humans or apes when it comes to hostility.

14. Uh....
Dolphins will ram baby porpoises and other marine mammals for sport. Don't get me wrong, I love them, but I won't romanticize them.

17. Sorta human-like, aren't they? But still, much less violent.
Stating the fact that they have rescued humans throughout our history is fact. It's not romanticizing.

And stating that they are less prone to violence is fact. It may have something to do with the extra lobe they have and that we and the chimps lack.

If you love the dolphins as you say then you should be aware that there is a fairly formidable propaganda campaign aimed at them. And it started with that National Geo "documentary" that distorted dolphin violence.

Dolphins NEVER attack humans in the wild. And you can't blame the occasional warning bite from a probable near psychotic or extremely frustrated involuntary circus performer.
