Several injured in blast in Cairo
Source: BBC News

At least four people have been injured in an explosion in Egypt's capital, Cairo, police say.

They say the blast happened in the historic Khan el-Kalili area popular with tourists.

It was not immediately known what caused the blast, but one reports said it was a bomb.

Riot police have cordoned off the area, near the Hussein mosque and a well-known bazaar.

Blast in crowded Cairo tourist area wounds 14
By OMAR SINAN – 18 minutes ago

CAIRO (AP) — A bomb exploded Sunday in a crowded Cairo market frequented by tourists, wounding at least 14 people, including foreigners, said police and medical sources.

The injured included French and German tourists, said a security official who did not have an exact breakdown of the wounded.

The blast took place in the famed Khan el-Khalili market in medieval Cairo, frequented by tourists and locals alike. Blood could be seen, on the marble paving stones in front of the historic Hussein mosque.

A police colonel at the scene said the small bomb went off outside a cafe near the mosque kicking up stone and marble fragments, which wounded the passersby.

6. You think it was his own intelligence department doing this?
Why would he have a need for this? It is already as hard-lined a dictatorship you can be without being North Korea...

7. well, divided between "qui bono?" and "qui gives a shit?"

A great police state (or even a mediocre one like dearest Hosni's) always requires fresh provocations to send out said-police to kidnap a few thousand of the opposition.... but then again, that happens on any average Monday anyway (the Western press that became so furiously indignant about a half-White blogger jailed somehow and quite meticulously failed to notice the thousands of Brothers, leftists, and Nasserists rotting in Mubarak's jails), so why bother tossing a single coconut off a balcony to a nest of tourists. So, could go both ways on it.

I'll make our favourite resident paranoid happy: obviously it was Israel behind this. (not a serious suggestion, just getting it out of the way so the aforementioned nut can burst onto the scene on cue)

8. True, but even said police state wouldn't want to harm their tourism industry
After all, they don't make shit in Egypt. They survive on foreign aid, tourism, and fossil fuel.

Don't hit the bee's nest, you fool!
