Bunning: Ginsburg will be dead in nine months
Source: Politico

Sen. Jim Bunning (R-Ky.), already in political trouble for 2010, didn’t help matters any over the weekend.

At a Lincoln Day Dinner speech over the weekend, Bunning predicted that Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg would likely be dead from pancreatic cancer in nine months, according to the Louisville Courier-Journal.

The paper reports that Bunning reiterated his support of conservative judges, saying “that’s going to be in place very shortly because Ruth Bader Ginsburg…has cancer.”

“Bad cancer. The kind you don’t get better from,” Bunning went on. “Even though she was operated on, usually nine months is the longest that anybody would live after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.”

People say he suffers from dementia or is senile. God, I'd love to see him taken out in 2010. Even his own caucus doesn't really support him. When asked about whether he's running, I think Cornyn said he doesn't know, even though Bunning had said he was. He hasn't raised much money and I think he'll have a tough primary challenger. It'll be a tough seat to take, but we have a better chance of taking Bunning down in an off year, as opposed to a presidential election year.

What a crazy son of a bitch. And what a disgusting, fucked up thing to say.

I was devastated when I heard. The doctor had told her that her chances were 50/50 (I thought that was encouragement more than honest assessment) but she blithely told everyone "Oh I'll be okay by next spring." She's usually more pessimistic about things. But she was okay. It took her another six months to get her strength back after the chemo, but she is alive and kicking.

12. Since Stevens lost his seat, Bunning is now
Inhofe's nearest competition for "Dumberest Senator"

He's senile and getting worse, not that he was ever an intellectual giant in the first place.

His gleeful cackling over a cancer diagnosis might make more sense had he realized his party got kicked out of the White House and lacks a majority in Congress and so he won't have anything to say about any replacement USSC justice for at least the next two years.

Bunning is one of the shining examples of why I think these old boys need cognitive evaluations every election and disqualification if they fail.

49. They would not be involved in idly yammering about it publicly, would they?
There are some among us who don't grasp the simplest truths about growing up, developing a social sense of responsibility toward others and ourselves.

This isn't a topic to yammer about publicly. If you are overwhelmed with the driving need to discuss someone's critically important health, have the decency to be low key about it, why not?

It's not rocket science.

53. I'm not following your train of thought. It's one thing for them to discuss it,
among themselves, with concern for her well being, and future, and it's another thing for fools to trumpet any idle brain movement they've got concerning Justice Ginsberg's health to the entire world.

It's not clear what kind of point you're trying to share.

Senator Bunning has NO business shooting off his filthy stupid mouth about this to any press. If he wants to gossip about Justice Ginsberg's health, he needs, absolutely, to do it on his own dime, and stop using her life as entertainment.

disclose his possible health problems, but when its a Supreme Court Justice, no one talks about it publicly.

I still think the press used this speech because they wanted to talk about Justice Ginsberg's health situation. And pancreatic cancer is bad. I should know, it runs in my family.

56. I'm not interested in dragging in other people, extending the conversation.
I have loved ones who've died already of this, and I am genetically disposed, as well, apparently, and there's never been any attraction among anyone I would ever associate with to babble on about other people's health like a total fool.

Using mass media to get one's filthy, pointless points across to huge numbers of people is contemptible. Crude, uncivilized behavior can never be appropriate.

I don't give a #### about Steve Jobs. What ON EARTH does he have to do with this "conversation?"

Read some of the other posts. People tend to agree it's a totally stupid, offensive, selfish, barbaric thing for Bunning to do, just like all of his other actions.

Why do you persist in going on and on about this? There's a clear right, and a definite wrong here.

Ginsburg's cancer was serious, but was caught early, limited, and operable.
The most serious kinds are not operable and/or have spread, and are basically a
matter of time, like a year or less after acute symptoms. That wasn't
Ginsburg's situation as I recall it reported.

so he's an idiot talking to idiots.
But the good news is, it ain't taking nine months to figure that out.

36. Let them keep on talking like this. All of them.
The word is out. The jig is up. Finally, finally, the public is realizing that 95% of republicans are mean-spirited, crazy pieces of crap, with this clown as one of their finest! It's a case of drip, drip, drip. Few will abandon the wingnuts over one little story like this. But as the examples of grotesque right-wing insensitivity and just bald-faced idiocy pile up and up and up, their fortunes will continue to sink.

I think 2010 is the year that we finally get rid of enough republicans to really make a difference in our governance. Of course it's frustrating that they are still apparently in charge, as a minority that has lost two landslide elections in a row. But take cheer. The third time is the charm!

42. Pancreatic Cancer
has very high mortality rate. his comment on the 9 month figure, while certainly callous, is statistically accurate:

http://www.pancreaticcancertreatment.net/pancreatic-cancer-life-expectancy.html

Once a person has been diagnosed with the condition, general pancreatic life expectancy is only 5 to 8 months, though 20 percent of pancreatic sufferers will live at least 1 year. The pancreatic cancer life expectancy for sufferers living over 5 years is only 5 percent.

http://emedicine.medscape.com/article/280605-overview

The relative 1-year survival is only 24%, and the overall 5-year survival rate for this disease is less than 5%. This number has not changed significantly over the years. A 5-year survival in pancreatic cancer is no guarantee of cure; patients who survive for 5 years after successful surgery may still die of recurrent disease years after the 5-year survival point. The occasional patient with metastatic disease or locally advanced disease who survives beyond 2-3 years may die of complications of local spread, such as bleeding esophageal varices.

Pancreatic carcinoma is unfortunately usually a fatal disease. The collective median survival time of all patients is 4-6 months. Most patients eventually succumb to the consequences of local invasion and metastatic cancer, and true long-term cures are rare. However, neuroendocrine and cystic neoplasms of the pancreas such as mucinous cystadenocarcinomas or intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms (IPMN) have much better survival rates than pancreatic adenocarcinoma.

In patients able to undergo a successful curative resection (only about 20% of patients), median survival time ranges from 12-19 months, and the 5-year survival rate is 15-20%. The best predictors of long-term survival after surgery are a tumor diameter of less than 3 cm, no nodal involvement, negative resection margins, and diploid tumor DNA content.

While there are certainly people who do live longer (Patrick Swayze is an example), they are the exception, not the rule.

63. I always try to keep the surprising ones like that in mind
Better than narrowing in on the pessimistic figures and declaring someone walking dead like what often happens with cancers these days.

One of my friends' mothers about five years ago got nailed hard with lung cancer, in the metastasized-to-the-brain sense of the word "nailed." She somehow managed to beat it off to the point where she's pretty much back to her pre-cancer state today. It ain't supposed to happen, but sometimes it does.

Some people are just hardcore.

43. People who insist upon discussing sensitive, personal information like this publicly
died intellectually, and morally long ago.

It's not something to gibber about publicly. Anyone with questions about the illness is certainly capable of finding out more about the condition personally any number of ways. We don't need pompous assholes deciding they're just going to educate everyone else.

Have a trace of decency, mind your own business, and let this woman go through this serious moment in her life without the big fleshy noses of idiots rooting around in her personal life, passing around their exalted points of view as if they could EVER matter to the rest of us.

Learn some respect for your fellow beings. They share the world with you, it's not all yours. Butt the fuck OUT.

We're adults, we take our lives seriously. It's about time you did, too.

Well, thank you, Dr. Bunning for that diagnosis.

I think in more ways than one I'm glad she didn't get it earlier when Bush was in office. Just the worry about who Bush would have replaced her with might have been enough to hasten her mortality too. Perhaps now that she knows Obama will likely be the one to ultimately replace her, she will live that much longer with a greater sense of security of her legacy not being messed up...
