S Lanka rebels 'ready for truce'

Tamil Tiger rebels in Sri Lanka have told the United Nations they are ready to comply with international calls for a ceasefire with government forces.

But the rebels said they would not lay down their weapons, as the government has demanded.

Meanwhile, a military spokesman said the rebels must lay down arms before they can take part in negotiations.

The Tigers have been driven from most of the territory they held by an army offensive in the past few weeks.

They are about to lose completely. But why on earth would the government forces agree to a truce?

3. great ... here are the terms ...

1. Surrender of all top LTTE commanders. Prabhakaran agrees to be extradited to India where he will be executed for the assasination of Rajiv Gandhi. All other LTTE leaders agree to stand trial for other political killings in Sri Lanka.
2. Complete & unilateral disarmament of LTTE. All weapons will be registed by a UN special armed force.
3. Release of all hostage civilians & child soldiers.
4. Tamil regions will elect their own state government in Northern & Eastern districts.
5. Repeal of Sinhala Act. Equal rights to Sinhalese & Tamil for official language of Sri Lanka
6. Integration of Tamilians into Sri Lankan economy, education, government & politics through affirmative policies.
