India may contest Obama's move against outsourcing in WTO
Source: Economic Times India

26 Feb 2009, 2115 hrs IST, PTI

NEW DELHI: India on Thursday indicated that the US move against outsourcing may be contested in the World Trade Organisation, stating New Delhi Financial crisis will take up the issue with Washington.

"We have to ensure what they (US) are doing is WTO compatible when we are talking about trade, movement of goods, movement of people and movement of services," Commerce and Industry Minister Kamal Nath said here.

"Yes, of course," he said when asked if India will take up the issue of outsourcing with the US administration.

In his first address to the joint session of the US Congress on Wednesday, Obama stated his administration would end tax breaks for corporations that ship the US jobs overseas.

Nath said, "One has to see how the US companies using India as a base for technological development respond to their own government." Outsourcing of technology development by large companies cannot be switched on and off, he added.

About 1,000 American firms, which have moved their jobs abroad, are expected to be affected by the proposed Obama move against outsourcing.

2. I agree
The arrogance of these Indian companies is on par with the arrogance of our own. That's why we need a progressive party in power in Washington.

6. The fuck it can't. So the WTO completely dictates our econmic policy now?
This is where we see if President Obama walks like he talks, the true test against the true monster.

10. It has been that way for many countries.
Saying no to the WTO and IMF meant worldwide shunning and measures against your country, always backed by those and, evidently, the USA. It might be a true test of Obama's resolve, as you say: should he tell them to shove it, it would pave the way for others to do so. Should he back down, it would mean that all governments have surrendered their sovereignty to these super-structures.

Enough "free" trade already. It's killing our economies as much as theirs.

15. Banning outsourcing will affect US more
The trade-balance between india and US is in favour of US unlike the trade-balance with china. If India were to counteract against Obama's actions, US has more to loose. Also it will be really stupid of Obama to break the friendly ties which Bush administration had established with India.

P.S. Indian rocket to Moon gave a free ride to NASA satellite.

4. Obama isn't saying no one can outsource.. he's just saying they won't
get tax breaks anymore if they do. :D "end tax breaks for corporations that ship the US jobs overseas."

Tax breaks are putting money in the pockets of corporations that would otherwise be paid to the US gov to help run things. So why should money that could be used here be given to companies that don't keep jobs here?

13. Looks as though this guy is a political thug

Source: Wikipedia

Nath was indicted by the Nanavati Commission on allegations that he was involved in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. Witnesses testified to seeing Nath lead an armed mob that attacked and demolished a Gurudwara in Rakab Ganj<3>. Nath allegedly incited the mob to attack. Several Sikhs were burned alive during the attack.<4> Nath responded to the Commission, saying that he visited the Gurudwara later in the day to investigate the agitation and urge peace.
The Commission Report observed that Nath's testimony was "vague" and "not consistent with the evidence" and also that his version of events was "a little of strange." However it overruled the contradictions in his testimony, saying "it is also required to be considered that he was called upon to give an explanation after about 20 years and probably for that reason he was not able to give more details." In conclusion the Commission said, "In absence of better evidence it is not possible for the Commission to say that he had in any manner instigated the mob or that he was involved in the attack on the Gurudwara"<5>.
Kamal Nath was embroiled in a controversy when the Supreme Court in March 2002, applying the polluter pays principle, imposed a fine of Rs 10,00,000 (US$ 25,000) on Kamal Nath for damaging the environment by building a motel on the bank of river Beas near Kulu-Manali in Himachal Pradesh. This irresponsible act changed the course of the river and thus caused ecological imbalance in that area. The Supreme Court Bench held that Kamal Nath was liable to pay a fine of Rs 10 lakh for causing damage to the sensitive ecology of the area by building Span Motel.<6>
