Gov. Bobby Jindal's volcano remark has some fuming
Source: CNN

(CNN) -- Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal's swipe at federal spending to monitor volcanoes has the mayor of one city in the shadow of Mount St. Helens fuming.
Gov. Bobby Jindal says spending for the U.S. Geological Survey is questionable.

"Does the governor have a volcano in his backyard?" Royce Pollard, the mayor of Vancouver, Washington, said on Wednesday. "We have one that's very active, and it still rumbles and spits and coughs very frequently."

---

"Instead of monitoring volcanoes, what Congress should be monitoring is the eruption of spending in Washington," Jindal said.

Gee, I wonder if he would have singled out a STORM WARNING project? What a tool.

Wow, that took some major bowling ball sized testicles there, dude. WOO HOO! Just TURN down that bridge to - wait, unemployment benefits? AH, that's it - turn down the $100,000 for unemployment benefits - but take the "pork" you talked about. 6. All I'm saying is, 'there goes the myth'
the myth that you've got to be sofa king smart to be a Rhodes Scholar. I don't know what impressed the board that selects Rhodes Scholars so much, but when it comes to making a coherent case for a cause, he's a fookin' idjit!

17. Scholarship is only one part of the Rhodes Scholar deal
You need to be very much into sports as well, as well as two other criteria. So you only have to be the smartest person who meets all those other criteria.

So being very into sports cuts a significant swath of really intelligent people out of the running or even trying.

24. Well, how, hold up...
Jindal himself might be sharp as a razor.

However, the Republican party panders to the anti-intellectual, hateful, and selfish sorts.

Feigning idiocy is actually part of the Republican MO. I'm sure a great many of them are very smart... But htey're so wrapped up in their act that even they can't tell anymore.

talk about your "grade inflation"! :dunce:

The Guardian got off perhaps the best line of the week on this subject, with this classic dry British understatement:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2009/feb/23/bobby-jindal-republican-response-obama

He was born and raised a Hindu, but converted to Catholicism and also has links to Protestant churches. Unusually for a Rhodes scholar, he believes in creationism, a viewpoint that increases his appeal to Christian evangelicals.

edit: In the semi-underground classic "Illuminatus!", Cecil Rhodes was cast as one of the top Illuminati. :tinfoilhat:

16. As Bush once said
even a C student can be the President of the United States. But judging the GOP history, maybe they'll be so "clever" as to choose a five college candidate.

As the congressional rep from La.'s exquisitely repuke-gerrymandered 1st CD, Jindal consistently managed to miss key votes on Katrina relief legislation. :eyes:

8. Funding for the U.S. geological survey is questionable?
You really have to be a flake to say that.

I was in northern Montana when Mt. St. Helen's blew. Even from hundreds of miles away, when the ash cloud got there, the ash was so thick that you could hardly see your hand in front of your face. You just can't afford to ignore volcanoes, or hurricanes.

9. Well, some people think they can be ignored....
Especially if you don't have an active volcano in your neighborhood, then it's someone elses problem.

18. Heck, you can ignore hurricanes, too
Just look at the federal response when Hurricane Katrina slammed into the Gulf Coast, spreading disaster from Texas to Alabama. For all the warnings and advance notice, the federal response was as if they didn't have the first clue what kind of damage to expect from a big motherfuckin' hurricane. Almost as if, instead of someone versed in disaster preparedness they had, I don't know, a horse show impresario running things.

10. "NO!" to volcanoes, but those "FEDERAL" levees sure are important
Forget about taxpayers in Alaska, the Northwest, and Hawaii. They can figure out volcanoes for themselves.

But when it comes to "Federal" levees for MY state, I expect federal money to repay them.

The Jindal emphasis upon "Federal" every time he mentions the word levee is so freaking obvious.

Not my fault. Not my fault. Federal problem.

The man is a joke.

20. Alaskans fume over Jindal volcano-monitoring gripe
Edited on Thu Feb-26-09 06:05 PM by RamboLiberal
-----

Jindal's comments provoked an eruption of their own. Alaska politicians, liberal bloggers and some scientists began pointing out how useful it is to let people know when a volcano in their neighborhood is about to explode.

"Volcano monitoring is a matter of life and death in Alaska," Democratic Sen. Mark Begich said in an open letter to Jindal.

Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski quickly agreed, noting in a press statement how "absolutely appropriate" it is to spend money on volcano monitoring. However, said Murkowski, Jindal raised "a legitimate question about funding volcano monitoring in legislation that's supposed to create jobs for unemployed Americans."

Jindal appears to have exaggerated by tenfold the $140 million he said was destined for the nation's volcano observatories.

Nearly all of that amount -- included in the stimulus bill for funding U.S. Geological Survey projects -- will go to other USGS functions nationwide, such as repairing facilities and mapping, said John Eichelberger, who heads the agency's Volcano Hazards Program in Reston, Va.

And as usual for Repukes, Jindal can't even get his facts straight!

21. Pathetic examples
Edited on Thu Feb-26-09 06:17 PM by ThoughtCriminal
The GOP has had weeks to go through the bill and find at least of morsel of authentic pork. When the big moment arrives and their new golden boy takes the stage, the best they can do is name an already debunked claim about the Las Vegas Maglev and (snicker-heh-heh) Volcano Monitoring?

The bottom line is that the Republicans cannot imagine that there could be possibly be any necessary and useful jobs in the government other than their own - everyone else is a parasite. To them, flipping burgers, stocking Walmart shelves with plastic made-in-China crap, or selling cigarettes, beer and porn at a convenience store are solid productive "Stimulating" jobs. Installing and monitoring seismographs, stream monitors, temperature sensors that protect citizens from natural disasters and advance scientific knowledge are wasteful pork jobs (no wait - forgot my newspeak "work").
