(CNN) -- Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal's swipe at federal spending to monitor volcanoes has the mayor of one city in the shadow of Mount St. Helens fuming.
Gov. Bobby Jindal says spending for the U.S. Geological Survey is questionable.

"Does the governor have a volcano in his backyard?" Royce Pollard, the mayor of Vancouver, Washington, said on Wednesday. "We have one that's very active, and it still rumbles and spits and coughs very frequently."

"Instead of monitoring volcanoes, what Congress should be monitoring is the eruption of spending in Washington," Jindal said.

I was in northern Montana when Mt. St. Helen's blew. Even from hundreds of miles away, when the ash cloud got there, the ash was so thick that you could hardly see your hand in front of your face. You just can't afford to ignore volcanoes, or hurricanes.

Just look at the federal response when Hurricane Katrina slammed into the Gulf Coast, spreading disaster from Texas to Alabama. For all the warnings and advance notice, the federal response was as if they didn't have the first clue what kind of damage to expect from a big motherfuckin' hurricane. Almost as if, instead of someone versed in disaster preparedness they had, I don't know, a horse show impresario running things.

Jindal's comments provoked an eruption of their own. Alaska politicians, liberal bloggers and some scientists began pointing out how useful it is to let people know when a volcano in their neighborhood is about to explode.

"Volcano monitoring is a matter of life and death in Alaska," Democratic Sen. Mark Begich said in an open letter to Jindal.

Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski quickly agreed, noting in a press statement how "absolutely appropriate" it is to spend money on volcano monitoring. However, said Murkowski, Jindal raised "a legitimate question about funding volcano monitoring in legislation that's supposed to create jobs for unemployed Americans."

Jindal appears to have exaggerated by tenfold the $140 million he said was destined for the nation's volcano observatories.

Nearly all of that amount -- included in the stimulus bill for funding U.S. Geological Survey projects -- will go to other USGS functions nationwide, such as repairing facilities and mapping, said John Eichelberger, who heads the agency's Volcano Hazards Program in Reston, Va.

The GOP has had weeks to go through the bill and find at least of morsel of authentic pork. When the big moment arrives and their new golden boy takes the stage, the best they can do is name an already debunked claim about the Las Vegas Maglev and (snicker-heh-heh) Volcano Monitoring?

The bottom line is that the Republicans cannot imagine that there could be possibly be any necessary and useful jobs in the government other than their own - everyone else is a parasite. To them, flipping burgers, stocking Walmart shelves with plastic made-in-China crap, or selling cigarettes, beer and porn at a convenience store are solid productive "Stimulating" jobs. Installing and monitoring seismographs, stream monitors, temperature sensors that protect citizens from natural disasters and advance scientific knowledge are wasteful pork jobs (no wait - forgot my newspeak "work").
