Ohio’s jobless rate hits 8.8% in January
Source: Business Courier of Cincinnati

Ohio’s unemployment rate didn’t climb last month. It soared.

The state Department of Job and Family Services on Friday reported Ohio’s jobless rate for January shot to 8.8 percent from 7.4 percent in December and 5.7 percent in January 2008. The unemployment rate hasn’t scaled to those heights since 1985, when it averaged 8.9 percent while the nation was emerging from a deep recession...

The state’s total work force, which includes employed Ohioans and the unemployed who are seeking work, totaled 5.74 million in January.

About three in every five jobs lost in the state last month were in the goods-producing sector, which includes manufacturing and construction jobs. In the service sector, the financial industry lost nearly 7,000 jobs, the department said.
