James Dobson resigns as Focus on the Family chair

DENVER (AP) - The Associated Press has learned that James Dobson has resigned as chairman of the conservative Christian group Focus on the Family.

Jim Daly, president and chief executive officer of the Colorado Springs, Colo.-based ministry, said Friday that Dobson will continue to host the organization's flagship radio program and speak out on moral issues.

The departure of the 72-year-old Dobson as board chairman is part of a succession plan. He founded the group in 1977.

Dobson began relinquishing control of the group six years ago by stepping down as president and CEO.

I bought his books, listened to his tapes, he actually wasn't half bad as a child psychologist. But it seems like that wasn't enough for him and he started going off on these weird political tangents and the child care books went by the wayside. At that point, I stopped reading his materials because, well, what was the point. It was like he tried to be an expert is something all of a sudden that he didn't have the training and background to do and it just all came across as very fake, futile, and ranting. I have been very disappointed in him since he went political. I think there are things that are callings and he was good at his calling of child psychology. When he wandered into politics, where he was not good and not prepared, it showed up and made him look like a buffoon. I wonder if he has finally realized that he did not have the calling for politics and he needed to quit while he was behind. Look at Ted Kennedy, you want to talk about a calling for politics, the man has has brain tumor and is still out there working away in politics.
Dr. Dobson needed to have realized his limitations and stuck with what he was good at instead of making himself look foolish in the field of politics.

back during reagan era, john mcglaughlin had pukeannon and james dobson and some other tapeworms on the show discussing eating the life outta planet earth, and Time magazines 'man o the year' candidates for 1984 and after lots the usual rightwing hooey, Pukeannon advised that 'Willie Horton' be the one, as he'd effectively got people to think reagan somehow won the '84 election against the hippie dippy weatherman(?) or was that Satan In ALL his Glory? Whatever....anyway, a while after that, i was listening to the dobson show on radio, and he suddenly brought up the 'man of the year' mcglaughlin show when the different candidates were discussed. Dobson mentioned the names, then said Pat Puke-annon made an 'off the wall' suggestion (ie Horton)! So, in the guise of a precocious teenage rightwinger, born-agin to boot, very innocent and eager, I wrote dobson and told him I'd seen the 'man of the year' mcglaughlin program and understood from watching it that the panel on Mcglaughlin show were very embarrassed at the 'willie horton' smear on Dukakis, (mr hippy dippy weatheman?) which ruined the democratic party's campaign, and did dr dobson think we righties were so stupid that the basic racism and snake-in-the-grass tactics we republicans always use to win might be very annoying to the LORD, who knows exactly what's going on, and ...well 'shame on you' dr dobson i wrote to him, with the addendum that i no longer believed anything in the news because the rightwing christian side always seemed to lie and constantly committed outright larceny in the news reports misleading the electorate blah blah blah....dobson wrote back by hand that he understood my distress blah blah blah, but 'god's will be done' and keep up the blah blah blah....
