Porn in the USA: Conservatives Are Biggest Consumers
Source: ABC News

Americans may paint themselves in increasingly bright shades of red and blue, but new research finds one thing that varies little across the nation: the liking for online pornography.

A new nationwide study (pdf) of anonymised credit-card receipts from a major online adult entertainment provider finds little variation in consumption between states.

"When it comes to adult entertainment, it seems people are more the same than different," says Benjamin Edelman at Harvard Business School.

However, there are some trends to be seen in the data. Those states that do consume the most porn tend to be more conservative and religious than states with lower levels of consumption, the study finds.

52. I think it shows that conservatives
Edited on Mon Mar-02-09 12:33 PM by tomg
are committed to truly fighting in their own private way at their own private computers in their own private little locked rooms the horrors of creeping socialistic pornography. They all know what Mao said in his speech in 1957 "Letting a hundred free porn sites blossom and a hundred free married but cheating sites contend is the policy for promoting progress in the arts and the sciences and a flourishing socialist culture in our land."

And it is not only the porn sector of the economy where they are upholding capitalism: There is the courageous work of David Vitter; Rush Limbaugh's work with the struggling pharmacies of the Dominican Republic ( and small struggling American entrepreneurs); and Bill Bennett and his tireless activities on the behalf of the gaming industry.

It's just stating the obvious. The purient minded moralists are a bunch of uptight creeps. Who knows, their urges are probably perfectly natural, but they reject what is natural in favor of a more perfect union with God which makes them twisted and perveted judging by their own standards.

I'm am so sick of idealism. The pragmatic realism of the present president is so refreshing!

8. The reports from prostitutes that service the conventions
say they make better money at the Republican ones. And also that they request more outlandish and kinkier sex.

Too bad for Watson and others like him that Denver didn't land the GOP convention instead, said Carol Leigh, a San Francisco prostitute "over 50" who has traveled to previous Democratic conventions in Los Angeles and Atlanta.

"It would be a lot better for the sex workers if it was the Republican convention," she said.

"We get a lot more business. I don't know if they're just frustrated because of the family values agenda," she said.

16. thanks for bringing that up . . .
I agree, I view myself as being conservative in many ways. I grew up in a small town in southern Illinois, left and came back to the same small town to care for elderly parents and stayed here because I wanted to make a difference in the ailing community. I'm active in my church, I don't smoke, drink, I drive the speed limit, and I make dolls. I never quite fit in during high school but am very comfortable with myself now because I am just a good person and I like it. But I also vote democrat because there is more I agree with in that parties view than what I see in the Republican view. I don't fit "well" into either viewpoint but that's okay too. There is room for all us. I think that you really can't pigeon hole people with a name, there will be Republicans who are wretched people just as there are democrats who are. I guess I just view the word "conservative" in my own nature as being a person who is a little more "clean cut" than many people in my actions and deeds. It is just the way I was raised. But interestingly enough, part of that upbringing is why I do vote democrat. My parents and my grandparents were the same small town, wholesome, honest people who would never hesitate to help someone in need. Long before there were social programs there were people just helping out others in need. I remember my Grandmother telling me about the Great Depression and the hobos that would come through looking for a meal. Even though my grandparents had meager means themselves, my Grandmother would always fix a hobo up a plate of biscuits and gravy if they came and asked for food. Many times, they would in return, do a chore such as chopping wood, before they got back on the train and went on their way to the next town. I know it was a different world then but we still have good people here who will help out a neighbor if they have a need, regardless of their political affliation.

12. Doesn't surprise me.
I bet the rates for pedophilia, incest, etc. are also higher in conservative areas. It seems like almost all of these extremely "family values" oriented people have something to hide. I used to live in one of these hard-core Republican areas and virtually every family there had some weird shit going on, from domestic violence to adultery to whatnot.

19. Represive societies and porn
my theory is that repressive christian churches are at the heart of the problem, if you chose to think it is a problem. "Porn addiction" is also directly linked to the higher divorce rates in the red states. Here is how this phenomena works.

Adam (age 21) is in love with Eve (age 19) and they have tried "saving it". Now this didn't workout very well because they "gave into temptation" a couple of times and now they pretty much had to get married in their eyes because they really wanted to have sex. Prior to that "the devil" or human nature has had Adam in front of the computer with Kleenexes and socks for years. His guilt is tearing him apart on the inside but can't tell his men's bible group because he is ashamed.

In Eve's women's bible study group she is being told about the evils of porn. She is also hearing horror stories from fellow group members of how their husbands were tempted by the devil with porn.

Neither Adam or Eve have really explored the sexuality because it is icky. Adam continues with his guilty self pleasure after their guilt ridden marriage. Eve catches him one day when she comes home from buying groceries. It all comes crashing down and the self loathing cycle continues. They go to counseling at the church to receive more guilt. Their marriage falls apart for a variety of reasons - guilt, not knowing themselves prior to marriage, and economics which is another part of the story I didn't tell about.

Ah the wonders of repressive society continues.......

22. Flawed conclusion
Edited on Sat Feb-28-09 10:22 AM by Kurt_and_Hunter
It's a study of online porn usage.

One would expect to see more online porn consumption in bible-belt type places that lack local options.

For instance, whether the local mom-and-pop video rental store has a XXX section would be a determinant. Whether the local cable system offers XXX fare would be a MAJOR determinant.

In places where the internet is the only porn option you'd expect to see more online use.

That said, of course Republicans consume most of the porn demographically: The top porn consumer is a white male age 30-65... pretty much the only group that went big for McCain.

24. Yeah
I would not cite that study because it only links consumption to red-states. For all we know, it is the liberals who feel so repressed by the inaccessible nature of quality smut in the South who throw the scale off.

Also, I'd bet rural areas in general have more porno consumption.

Finally, it is fairly obvious the Conservatives are hypocrites on social control issues.

25. Let's not leave out
the religious kooks.

I have a BIL who's a "Born Again Christian" and a convicted child molester. His wife, my sister, also seems to have....issues. She has enabled his sickness for years. She has also bought porn movies and then justified it by saying that they have "a really good plot".

Yeah...here's the "plot". Woman expects plumber. Woman answers door wrapped in nothing but waxed paper and seduces the plumber. He "fixes her pipes" and goes merrily on his way, leaving two minutes before her hubby gets home.

Or something similar. They're all pretty much the same except for the faces.

To my sister, that's a good plot. Oh well...

Also...I have friends who nearly disowned their own male relative for getting involved in a wife swapping group and divorcing his wife to marry one of the other women in the wife swapping group (who also happened to be a neighbor). They carried on in full view of the neighbors and their families and their children. These people are church-going Christians. The very last people ANYONE would suspect of such a thing. When I first heard about it, I was completely blown away.

Of course, they could all be Conservatives as well. I wouldn't doubt it...

I just find it...interesting...when "people of faith" are shown to have feet of, not clay, but manure.
