Civil servants attacked for using anti-terror laws to spy on public
Source: Guardian (UK)

"Controversial surveillance powers employed to fight terrorism and combat crime have been misused by civil servants in undercover "spying" operations that breach official guidelines, the Guardian has learned.

Documents obtained under Freedom of Information show some government departments and agencies have used these powers incorrectly or without proper controls. They also show the official government watchdog set up to monitor the use of such clandestine techniques criticised the departments for their behaviour."

1. Agreed. Whodda thunk those broad powers would ever be abused? Each and every House member and
Senator who voted for those laws and the Iraqi occupation should be flogged. Daily. Until repeal.

2. Just want to point out,
this article is about Great Britain, not U.S. That's not to say, though, that it hasn't happened here.

4. It already has. I recall the FBI getting busted on this and the fine folks...
who monitor the warrantless wiretaps on the military only getting sex talk.

3. This is very relevant to the US, here's how . . .
(This probably deserves its own thread but here goes)

Some people will respond, "Well, if you don't have anything to hide then it shouldn't matter."

We all have something to hide and to keep secure, namely our identity, finances, and our well being, how about our personal lives? Imagine if you are critical of the government (dissention is patriotic), you invented some new revolutionary technology and want to reap the rewards and keep the know how secret?, found the golden pot of treasure at the end of the rainbow?, all the good reasons to keep important worthy secrets are plentiful and we should have the right to do so.

If you haven't watched the following NOVA program then you should (you can watch it on line for free). It is really far worse than I ever thought possible. George Orwell's 1984 has nothing on the NSA warrantless wiretapping of ALL DATA of ALL AMERICANS, 24/7/365 days a year!

NOVA: The Spy Factory
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/spyfactory/

Check-out: the video, ask the expert (great Qs and unbelievably scarry answers), the New Thought Police. This all is very, very disturbing to me. Seems as though Obama is not going to do squat about it, and all this illegal and massive shreading of the Constitution happened by Bush et al. I am very concerned and so should you be.

That isn't all! How about Radio-frequency identification RFIDs that can be placed on and in everything???

Here is a great thorough article from Wikipedia on the technology and this entire abuse of our liberties. We can all be tracked and the potential to track us is easily available even if you don't have a cell phone. You are a consumer are you not? You use credit cards at times don't you? You could easily have an RFID chip on you right now within a product of some type that you wear of carry.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RFID

Do you know that your cell phone can secretly bug you without you ever knowing about it? The feds: FBI, CIA etc., and even criminals who know how to do it can turn your cell phone on remotely and hear your conversations without you ever knowing. Our cell phones come loaded with a bug, or the software to instantly turn it into a remote bug can be sent through a message that you don't even have to answer.

With Technology Like This, Who Needs the Law?

The comments are also interesting at the end.

Also see this ACLU document regarding the case:

Also here is a great resource concerning the lawsuit cases the ACLU has brought against the US Government regarding the use of cell phones to illegally listen in and track people:

More on the evils of RFID technology (scary stuff):

Leon Theremin, the Father of RFID technology was a Russian spy, and he developed the technology that was hidden in a hand-carved wooden seal of the USA with the Bald Eagle and all. The plaque was a gift from Russian children with the RFID bug hidden inside. The plaque hung on a wall in a US embassy office, and from the parking lot, Soviet spys were able to trigger it to listen in. This went on for 6 years even though they would sweep for bugs, because it was passive, it wouldn't send a radio signal unless triggered by the correct frequency.

The book I ordered on the abuses and dangers of RFID just came in and I'm reading it cover to cover. What a scary but important read. It isn't going to just happen down the road in the future, it is already happening right now. Don't forget the term Verichip!

The new US passport with RFID chip:

“Get a load of the new RFID-tagged passports -- and read the weird Lyndon B. Johnson quote the State Department chose to print on pages 20-21. (Click here for a larger version.) It's bad enough that the new passports contain spychips and a warning to be careful with the "sensitive electronics" they contain, but the inclusion of a presidential New World Order quote is beyond the pale. (Thanks to CASPIAN member Mike W. for sending these.)”

Sometimes I really hate this corrupt evil world we live in. Maybe the Amish have it right. Fore go all technology, but then maybe that isn't enough? We are driving straight away to the final prophetic end, right off the cliff, and many don't know about it or don't care.

This is not the world I want or that I want for my children. Makes me want to take my family and live off the land and just climb and adventure together. Forget the world. Native Americans did it for thousands of years; I'm envious of their ability to do so. Wow, I could climb and be with my family everyday.

Maranatha. Please Lord, return quickly.

In the meantime, I will continue to be a good steward and continue the fight to protect the Earth, and to continue to fight to protect all of our Rights and Freedoms and to what is right. That is at the least our minimum responsibility and duty.

5. Thanks for those links...
I am bookmarking this thread because of them. You're right, we all have something we don't want made public, even if it isn't illegal.

6. Who's Watching Big Brother?
Here in "The Colonies," the Patriot Act(s)just legalized what the government and its civil servants have been doing for quite some time even before Congress passed it without even reading it first. And just as in the UK there are no effective checks and balances here in the USA. It's human nature and especially government's nature to abuse these powers.
