Many dead in Sri Lanka, says UN (Continued killing of civilians)

The UN in Sri Lanka says that it estimates that thousands of civilians have been killed and wounded in the conflict in the north-east.

The UN's Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) says civilians continue to lose their lives within the war zone.

It says that they are also being killed in the no-fire area which has been hit by artillery attacks.

The government says the UN's figures are "irresponsible and sensationalist".
