Rebels, Searching Houses, Try to Tighten Control in Haiti
By LYDIA POLGREEN

AP HAITIEN, Haiti, Feb. 23 — Carloads of rebels went from house to house here today to flush out militant supporters of President Jean-Bertrand Aristide, tightening their hold on Haiti's second-largest city one day after seizing control of it with little resistance.

At the same time, 50 American Marines were headed to the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince today to protect the American Embassy and diplomats, according to The Associated Press.

One suspected supporter held by the rebels lay face down in the back of a pickup truck here, a trickle of blood coursing down his face from a cut on his forehead. The rebels said the man, a 26-year old brickmason, was directing them to the homes of other Aristide loyalists.
