Group (of alumni) Demands Stanford Cut Ties With Condi
Source: NBC Local

A group of Stanford alumni who took a stand against the Vietnam War 40 years ago met up at their Alma Mater over the weekend and in true style, protested.

Members of the April 3rd Movement marked their anniversary at Stanford University Sunday by calling for the school to sever its ties with Condoleezza Rice.

The upset group nailed a petition to the door of the president's office demanding that the former Bush administration Secretary of State and National Security Advisor be held accountable for what they say are serious violations of the law, including the approval of torture and misleading the country by going into the Iraq war.

National Lawyers Guild President Marjorie Cohn and leader of the April 3rd Movement was at the demonstration.

"To have a professor as a tenured professor in the political science department of Stanford University who told lies to get us into an illegal war and who authorized torture, which is a war crime and violates our law," Cohn said, "she has no place in the political science department at Stanford."

6. On the one hand, I'd love to be in her class and able to ask her questions. On the other hand, she
should be run off the planet for so many reasons, starting with her role as head of national security and continuing to her current cover up attempts. So, I have very mixed feelings. I come down on the side of disgracing her in any possible way, though.

8. Good for them! I'm thrilled to recommend this thread.
We need more people to stand up to these terrorists...yes, terrorists...that's what they are. They started a war based on lies that has resulted in the deaths of thousands of innocent people, both Iraqis and Americans, and they tortured other human beings, despite knowing it was against the law of the land, as well as against accepted standards on how to treat prisoners in most of the world.

but going on tour with John Valby, or being the house pianist for the Sagebrush Ranch would be even better.

We must always remember the old joke...

Little Rotten Johnny was in class when his teacher decided to have the children play the game of "who is your daddy and what does he do?"

"Johnny, what does your daddy do?"

'Miss Pimm, my daddy is a male prostitute.'

"Johnny, stop that. Class, Johnny's daddy is a very important man. He is one of President Bush's most important aides."

'Aw gee, Miss Pimm, I was hoping nobody would find that out!'

54. She could teach music in prison
I suppose, but anywhere else? None of these lying war-criminals who caused the deaths of hundreds of thousands of innocents, including babies (I remember, I saw the pictures on Dahr Jamail's website while she continued to lie all over what passes for the US news media) should be allowed to influence young people in any way unless a jury finds them innocent somewhere, a very unlikely result considering the evidence imho.

It is an outrage that she and the rest of them are not questioned about their behavior during the past eight years every time they appear on television. Instead they are treated like royalty.

There will never be justice as long we are without a free and impartial press, so most likely she will end up as a respected college professor while her victims spend the rest of their lives trying to deal as best they can with the tragedies of their lives, inflicted on them by the Bush administration, and sadly part of the blame goes to at least half the population of this country, those who fully supported them without question.

10. Tenured? Didn't she have a government job until a few months ago?
Didn't she have to wait a bunch of years to get tenure, like any normal mortal? Or are they saying to get rid of her before she *gets* tenure?

Either way, yeah, she doesn't have the intellectual stature to be teaching at the university level. Maybe she could teach shop at a manual arts school.

11. Condi Rice is an embarrassment to Stanford.
I note that Berkeley has not fired Yoo, but he has moved at least temporarily to Orange County where he can bask in the admiration of fellow torture fans. Stanford, home of the Hoover Institution, is probably more hospitable to torturers than Berkeley. We shall see what happens.

Stanford, home of the Hoover Institution, is a right-wing haven.

15. during the Vietnam war Stanford got a lot of
Defense Dept(D.A.R.P.A.) spending esp., on computer sciences which begot Google, Intel, Yahoo, all the hotshots of the computer industry. I think I read they had even built an underground nuclear launching facility aimed at the Far East in preparation for an all out war. George Schultz no.1 Conservative Republican is in charge of the Hoover Institute, so good luck to the Stanford students and alumni to rid Stanford of Condi.

12. "Now" the alumni make a move, after 4th graders have taken Rice to task? . . .
I used to have a lot of respect for the Bay Area Universities, but after Rice showed the low-standards Stanford hold for its academics, and Yoo irrevocably stained Cal's reputation, I'll never look at those two institutions the same again.

16. I'd love for them to do it BUT....
it sets a dangerous and potentially unfortunate precedent for alumni forcing an institution to change it's mind. I have ties to Notre Dame University and think Obama's commencement speech there will be a great a historic moment there. But there are people who adamantly disagree with me and the University and are protesting the invitation. They are different situations because Obama is being protested because he has a pro-choice platform and Condi had a hand in fucking up this country. BUT they are still protests and if the Stanford "hippies" succeed, it gives the right wing fundies (no matter how nutty they are) a leg to stand on.

They are not the same but alumni protesting and forcing their university to changes it's mind is similar. Wow, you really think I said they're equal? I just don't want the fundies to have a more ammunition than just being crazy. Get it? Jeeeeeez, way to call out someone who is on your side.

You can see the resemblance on a cold day in hell, what does that even mean?

47. Your thinking is flawed...
You are objecting to university protests. You seem to think that a win by a protest based upon lofty principles will bolster the cause of a protest with malevolent objectives. That premise is simply false. Furthermore, you are arguing against protest and in favor of the status quo... you are essentially proposing that management should decide without outside interference. That is not the type of thinking that you'll typically find here because it's a naive and dangerous way of looking at the world.

If you stop and think it through for a moment, you'll see why your comment was shot down.

She probably will pull in money for the university which is how universities look at their "moral obligations" which really just come down to how much money someone can pull in for them.

That was the bottom line for SMU and be assured that many of those who have contributed $100 million so far to the Bush Library will be writing nice checks to the university itself.

Like Georgette Mosbacher said, it's all about the money, honey.

responsible, law-abiding, ethical, and moral lives and leave the war criminal alone.

The only thing that Ms. Rice seemed to excel in, was kissing up to her boss. The benefits of her studies in PoliSci were certainly not in evidence during her tenure at State.

I do believe, unless my history is failing me, that Ms. Rice was by far, the worst SecState that this country has ever had. Granted, in an administration that was by far, the worst administration in modern history, she is but one of a litany of individuals in that administration, starting at the top, who would have served their country better had they pursued careers more in line with their intellectual aptitude.

...having moved to California during my Junior year of high school, followed by several years on and around the Stanford campus with friends who attended, I've got a range of mixed feelings about the place.

But no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't get my arms around the "At the end of the Bush administration, Condi is going to feather her new nest at Stanford" thing.

It lends dignity and credibility to a woman who hardly deserves it. They should kick her sorry ass to the curb.
